The week BLUESHAPE salutes a company that wants the shirt off your back – and many other items in your wardrobe also. Our salute to “Doing What’s Right Instead of What’s Easy” acknowledges the company Protein Evolution which focuses on recreating fabric and textiles. With the challenges in recycling these types of materials, it is important that new uses for waste, especially post-consumer waste, be developed. Also important is not creating new problems while solving the old ones. Many of the uses for polyester waste incorporate solvents and other chemicals to breakdown the materials. Protein Evolution uses enzymes developed to target specific materials that will convert the pre-processed plastic into reusable raw materials. The end result is also acceptable and usable as a substitute for the “original” fossil-fuel derived molecules used to produce polyester. The new product, Biopure,™ is indistinguishable from the products made with raw materials. The process is has completed its pilot period; Protein Evolution is building a facility capable of processing 50,000 tons of synthetic textiles per year. With a reported 25% of clothing and textiles being recycled, having a positive use for the other 75% is critical. Can biodegradable microplastics save our health and planet? Scientists at the University of California, San Diego, and the materials science company Algenesis Materials have developed biodegradable microplastics that break down in under seven months. Finding viable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics and microplastics, such as biodegradable microplastics, has never been more important due to their impact on our planet and our health. Microplastics are tiny, nearly indestructible fragments shed from everyday plastic products. Biodegradable and compostable plastics are showing up more as demand for “green” products grows. While they can help reduce waste, they’re far from a magic fix for the plastic crisis. If mismanaged, they can harm the environment just as much as traditional plastics. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲? ➡️ 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 break down into natural substances, but only under specific, controlled conditions that don’t always exist in nature. ➡️ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 turn into soil conditioners—but only in proper composting facilities or in a certified home compost bin. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺: ➡️ Without proper disposal, these materials often fail to break down, polluting ecosystems like regular plastic. ➡️ They can also contaminate recycling streams, and many composting programs don’t accept them. 🚨 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 Biodegradable and compostable plastics are useful tools in certain situations, but they’re not a solution.
