The goal was to uncover patterns and insights that could inform policy decisions and strategic planning. 🛠 Technical Highlights: Advanced Joins: Integrated multiple data sources to create a detailed dataset, including company size, industry, and geographical data. Subqueries and Nested Queries: Used subqueries to perform intermediate calculations, such as identifying peak layoff periods and industry-specific trends. Window Functions: Applied window functions to calculate cumulative layoffs over time, moving averages, and rank countries and industries based on the number of layoffs. CTEs (Common Table Expressions): Simplified complex queries by breaking down data processing into manageable steps. “The economy is great. Why are people complaining? There are plenty of jobs. People just need to apply for them.” People who think this way are delusional. They simply look at limited datapoints including the publicly shared unemployment rate and new jobs created. They forgot to dive deeper into those statistics and also look at other datapoints. Some others they miss are: 📉Steady mass layoffs. 📉Increased underemployment. 📉Job openings in industries including retail, food and beverage,healthcare, and manufacturing that are misaligned with most Job Seeker’s skills and experience. 📉Increased bankruptcy filings. 📉Increased foreclosure filings. 📉Increased credit card rates and debt. 📉High mortgage rates. All the while, C-suite management gets richer and millions of people worldwide are struggling to find work. On a global scale, 200+ million unemployed and 100’s of millions underemployed may seem like a drop in the bucket, but real people are suffering. The USA middle class is being destroyed.
