2024 Foulkes Fellow Spotlight: Meet Hugo Creeth
"I completed my PhD in 2017 at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd and continued my enjoyable academic career with two fascinating post-doctoral positions investigating the epigenetic triggers of post-natal depression and ADHD, and the genetic foundations of schizophrenia. I consistently found myself longing to connect directly with those affected by these conditions."
Why did you decide to study medicine?
"In 2019, my perspective changed dramatically with the birth of my son, who was diagnosed with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The meticulous care he received in the NICU inspired me to realise that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. This experience drove me to embark on the challenging journey of getting into medical school, determined to make a tangible difference in patient care.
Balancing marriage, parenthood, work, and medical studies has been no small feat, especially with the arrival of my daughter in 2021 and my mother’s early onset dementia diagnosis in 2023. Since starting my medical studies, I have deepened my understanding of patient treatment and the importance of precision medicine, tailoring treatments to individual patient needs, particularly in the complex field of psychiatry."
What does the future hold?
"Looking to the future, I aim to merge my research expertise with clinical practice to enhance the understanding of mental health and neurological conditions. My goal is to make a real, positive impact on patient lives through neuropsychiatry, an emerging field that bridges my clinical and research interests."
Why the Foulkes Foundation?
"The Foundation has been instrumental in my journey, providing not only financial support to allow me to focus on my studies, but also put me into contact with fascinating and inspirational individuals who are all part of the Foulkes Foundation Family!
In conclusion, I owe the Foundation a lot as their assistance has been, and will be, crucial in overcoming the financial and emotional challenges of this significant career change, enabling me to pursue my dream of becoming a clinician and researcher dedicated to improving patient care."
