Desertification, land degradation, and drought, caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations, are a silent and invisible crisis affecting people in all regions of the world. As human life requires fertile and productive lands for many essential activities, halting degradation or rehabilitating degraded land through land restoration will be key to enhance biodiversity, restore ecosystem services, and mitigate climate change impacts. This year's theme for World Environment Day is; Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience, under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” This is a call for government, organizations and individual stakeholders alike to address the reality of the climate crisis, providing concrete and sustainable solutions to this global problem. 🎥 @IOM - UN Migration

🏔️ Glacial Lake Outburst Floods: A Growing Threat in Nepal and Beyond 🌊 As we approach #COP29, it's crucial to highlight the increasing danger of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable regions like Nepal. This timely side event couldn't be more relevant, especially in light of recent events: 🚨 Just this August, two lakes in Nepal burst, destroying dozens of homes in a village known for its Everest sherpas. This incident underscores the urgent need for action and collaboration. 🌡️ Climate change is accelerating glacier melt, forming more unstable lakes. Nepal alone has experienced 26 GLOFs between 1977 and 2020. 🌏 The threat is global: 15 million people worldwide are at risk from GLOFs, with Pakistan, China, India, and Peru being the most vulnerable. 🤝 International cooperation is vital. Nepal has been seeking crucial data from China about glacial lakes, emphasizing the need for cross-border information sharing. Thank you The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) for inviting me to discuss the future of the green transition - local strategies and actions at CEMR Green Day last Wednesday. I had the pleasure to present and discuss OECD's flagship work on a Territorial Approach to Climate Action and Resilience (TACAR). My takeaways from the discussion : 1) Avoid a sectoral approach, ensure alignment of different sectoral initiatives at the European and country level; 2) Pay attention to locally different condition (e.g. heating) and tailor policies accordingly; and 3) Collaborate and engage with local actors.
