Sadistic researchers used electric shocks to study uncertainty. There were three situations: 1. Participants knew they weren't going to get shocked. 2. Participants knew they WERE going to get shocked. 3. They didn't know if they were going to get it or not... 50-50. Situation 1 = low stress Situation 2 = medium stress Situation 3 = maximum stress We get comfort out of knowing what will happen, even when it's bad. Great sharing this research with the Greater London Authority. Thanks to David McCollum for inviting me to speak. ----------------------------- I’m Graham. Emotional intelligence is about more than just being "in touch" with your feelings—it’s a skill set that shapes how we navigate relationships and lead in our work. A fascinating three-part article on EI—link in the comments—features insights from leading experts like Peter Salovey, John Mayer Marc Brackett, Robin Stern, Lisa Feldman Barrett, Katrina McCoy and Michael Wiederman. Here’s what stood out: ♦ EI is a skill, not a trait. Abilities like identifying, understanding, and managing emotions in ourselves and others can predict success in school, work, and relationships. ♦ Emotional granularity matters. Precisely naming emotions—like distinguishing between “frustrated” and “disappointed”—can reduce stress and improve mental health. ♦ Awareness is just the start. Managing emotions is essential to fully benefit from EI. These insights highlight how emotional intelligence can drive personal and professional growth. Read the full article to explore practical strategies for building your EI—link in the comments.
