An important environmental issue that has come up time and time again is invasive species, and how they are impacting native wildlife. Yet the more I look into it, the more I see how domesticated animals are ignored in that aspect of being an invasive species. For example, feral cats are a massively invasive species particularly on islands like Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. These feral cats are the leading cause of native bird death, as well as native reptiles, and rodents. This is due to the fact that feral cats are generalist predators, which means their range of prey varies a massive amount. Personally, I believe that feral cats are a huge issue, and need to be weeded out through humane means like spay and neuter programs, as well as proper adoption centers. Not all feral cats will adjust to this so slowly weeding out the number of feral cats, and even indoor outdoor cats is hugely important to do via spay and neuter programs. For more information about invasive species, not just cats and they impact the environment check out the Conservation Management page at https://lnkd.in/eGeCcgVA who are located in Hobart, Tasmania. Another place to look for more information about invasive species is the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions which can be found at https://lnkd.in/eGuzSZBQ, and are located in Bruce, ACT. As someone who is highly interested in rehabilitating native wildlife, and taking care of those animals who cannot be released due to conditions these animals may have suffered, I highly believe in protecting their populations from invasive species. This to me is a huge deal, and a personal goal of mine to ensure that our native wildlife thrives, and potentially is even able to make a full comeback in the future.

Missed BBC's The One Show featuring The Wild Oysters Project? Now you can catch it on BBC iPlayer! https://lnkd.in/eDPfhjWx Vicky Pattison visits The Wild Oysters Project and gets stuck in helping the team of marine conservationists and volunteers to monitor the mature native oysters housed in Sunderland marina. The Wild Oysters Project, a partnership between ZSL and Groundwork NE & Cumbria is funded by the Stronger Shores project. Together our aim is to help improve the health of our coastal waters through the restoration of native oyster reefs. Native oyster populations have declined by around 95% in the past 200 years, with the significant decline resulting from a combination of habitat loss, over-harvesting, pollution and disease. When healthy and thriving oyster reefs, are hugely productive and help a rich biodiversity of associated species to thrive. They can provide important fish nursery ground habitat, with the potential to supporting commercially important species such as seabass, sea bream and edible crabs. Together, we are determined to bring the species back from the brink of extinction, which will in turn will help contribute towards healthier and more resilient coastal waters across the UK.

Ukraine Series: Humanitarian Mine Action and Environmental Issues webinar The well-established concept of “do no harm” is a framework that is commonly applied in the broader humanitarian sector, and has been put forward as directly applicable to environmental concerns within mine action. The concept broadly reflects current approaches of mine action organizations to mitigate and minimize direct (negative) environmental impacts of mine clearance operations such as emissions, erosion, residual waste, and harm to wildlife and vegetation. Attendees will also learn how they can support humanitarian demining and ecological restoration efforts in Ukraine. Who is this for? •Policymakers •Foresters •Land managers •Environmental consultants •Natural resources professionals• People interested in the war, environmental issues, and humanitarian demining #Ukrainefreeofmines
