Surge in Female Entrepreneurship in the UK After 35 years immersed in the world of entrepreneurship, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report is an annual must-read. This year, it uncovers a fascinating shift: women starting ventures have tripled since 2002, climbing from 3.5% to 10% by 2023. It's a testament to changing times and growing opportunities. However, not all the news is positive. Young Company Finance (YCF) highlights a troubling trend in Scotland: investment in female-founded businesses is dwindling. In 2023, women raised less than a quarter of the funds that male-led firms secured per round. This disparity calls for urgent attention and action. This Hispanic Heritage Month I’m honoring roots and building futures. As we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m reflecting on the journey that led me to become the founder and CEO of Mezala Consulting , a DEI and Health Equity consulting firm. My Puerto Rican heritage is not just a part of who I am — it's the foundation upon which I've built my life's work, using medicine and medical research as a tool for social justice. I owe so much of my drive and passion to my grandmother, a formidable woman who taught me the true meaning of entrepreneurship, generational wealth, and self-actualization. Reflecting on a 5 -Year Journey with EYouth and Beyond As I stand in my office at EYouth, surrounded by snapshots of memories, each photo on this wall tells a story of growth, challenges, and triumphs. Today marks my 5-year anniversary with EYouth, and it's a tapestry of moments that have shaped not just a career, but a mission. These images also take me back to my days at the University of Connecticut School of Business of Connecticut, where the seeds of entrepreneurship were sown. It was there, amidst the intellectual rigor and the vibrant community, that the first business plan for EYouth was born. It was more than just an academic exercise; it was the blueprint for what would become a part of my soul. EYouth started as a dream on paper, a vision to empower youth through education and innovation. Now, it stands as a testament to what passion, dedication, and collective effort can achieve. When I was at school, I was rubbish at Geography - ok I didn't really pay attention, my teacher's shoes were terribly scuffed and he spat ferociously while talking....and I was always told to sit at the front....I wonder why😅. On the other hand I was quite good at Biology, my teacher was engaging, had impeccable style so I obviously paid much more attention. Still for some strange reason the word ecosystem was such a complex construct for me to understand. I remember craming the definition for my O levels exams - "An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in a particular area" Years later not thinking I would ever meet that word again, I became a Lawyer, got married, reinvented into Technology Consulting, then Divorce Recovery Coaching, Leadership Reinvention Coaching and so many other things inbetween. Being relational and a lover of people the beauty of my journey through life has been the wide array of wonderful individuals, I have met, worked with, shared speaking platforms with, collaborated with, served under, mentored, coached and been mentored by, being coached....and suddenly that word "Ecosystem" doesn't seem too complex to understand as I reflect on my life, and realise the multitude of multi-talented ecosystems I have had the privilege to be part of or have acces to in one form or another. One such is the Atlanta Chambers of Commerce. Thank you Claudine Reid MBE and Ricardo Berrís for running this evening's Atlanta Chambers of Commerce meets UK Businesses Power Hour. It was just that - A POWERFUL one hour overflowing with next level dare to imagine "add another zero" strategies and valuable information regarding black dominated business opportunities in a ready, viable and welcoming Atlanta Entrepreneurship ecosystem. As well the fact that Business opportunities is geographically agnostic. My key take aways. 1. Trade partnerships and collaboration are very very possible provided your service and solutions solve a community pain point(s) 2. Relationship and Connection Building can never be over emphasised. 3 The importance of Scaling and Productising your service and/product more. 4. Investment and Transactional opportunities especially in the woman Entrepreneurship, & Coaching, Youth, Elder, Housing and Technology spaces. 5. Access and Idea Reciprocation being the keys to the successful growth of this incredible ecosystem and everyone who is part of it, who dares to dream and then take action. Yep August is a good month....
