Our Experience with Global Citizens at Granny Murray World Children’s Day, celebrated on November 20th, promotes awareness, action, and dialogue around children's rights and welfare globally. This day highlights the importance of nurturing young people as local and global citizens—individuals who understand their roles within their communities while recognizing their responsibilities on a global scale. Granny Murray’s initiative fosters a sense of community and global awareness among children by integrating practical lessons with cultural exchange. Through activities like art, and collaborative projects, children are encouraged to reflect on their local environment and how their actions can impact the wider world. We caught up with some of the mentors within the Granny Murray community and listened to what they had to say about the children. #WorldChildrenDay #GlobalCitizens #Education #Schools #Children #School #Family #Community #Abuja #Nigeria #Africa #Teacher #Mentor Josephine Anikoh-Oke valentine ezike Anthonia Atebe Adebiyi Oke Muhammed Muhammed

As we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation today, it's important for all of us to reflect on the harm caused to Indigenous communities by colonial systems, including the legacy of residential schools. We must also acknowledge the ways child welfare services have impacted Indigenous children and families. It’s critical that we continuously examine our practices and strive to support Indigenous communities with respect and understanding. At CCAS, we are committed to aiding in dismantling these colonial systems and prioritizing healing with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. Honouring Indigenous culture, language, medicine, and traditions is vital in our work with these communities. Our Equity Plan prioritizes education, practice reviews, and alignment with OACAS reconciliation commitments. We've reduced the number of Indigenous children in care working closely with Native Child and Family Services. Training is central to our efforts, with courses and resources available to staff. We are also helping individuals access historical files, having reviewed nearly 600 records linked to Indigenous identities. We recognize that there is still much work ahead, and without sustained, proactive action, true reconciliation cannot be achieved. We remain committed to engaging with Indigenous communities and fostering healing through concrete actions. Today we encourage everyone to take time to listen and learn from Indigenous voices. Understanding these perspectives is essential to our continued commitment to reconciliation and the important work we do. #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousRights #NDTR #CCAS

Great result to see this 5-year strategic plan for 'street children' by the Ghana government! Now, the big question is, given that previous efforts and multi-year plans had limited success, how will this initiative be so much better than the earlier ones ("Operation Go Back to School" and "Operation Get Off the Streets for a Better Life")? Because: Reintegration of street-connected children is not easy - and there are rarely "quick fixes"! I really hope that the actual implementation will be in intense collaboration with street children NGOs and CSOs who understand the exact challenges and realities on the ground. Hopefully it will all be successful, and then also sustainable beyond this 5-year plan. So: Great initiative, and good that it was developed in close collaboration with stakeholders, and with guidance from the Consortium For Street Children (UK). Really curious to follow the actual implementation and hopefully the successes.

This report details the ways in which indigenous children, especially the 80 percent who do not live on tribal lands, aren’t receiving the early education and care services they need. “Although many Tribal Governments would like to support their members, they lack both the jurisdiction and funding to do so,” writes Linda Smith, the director of the early childhood initiative at the Bipartisan Policy Center. “As a result, many children are left without access to quality care that acknowledges their culture, languages, and customs, and their parents are left without access to child care that supports their employment.” After hundreds of years of policies and practices that deliberately severed indigenous children from their families and histories, it's imperative indigenous children receive culturally relevant education that acknowledges and affirms their identities. The policies suggested in this report are valuable, as they were developed in consultation with dozens of indigenous families and relevant agencies. https://lnkd.in/gwGebHhq #bipartisanpolicy #indigenouschildren #nativeamerican #nativechildren #tribalsovereignty #educationequity #culturalheritage #indigenouslanguage #languagepreservation #educationpolicy #nyulangone #parentcorps

Report Outlines Barriers to School Transportation for Vulnerable Students The Equitable Access to Transportation Advisory Council (EATAC) in its first report outlined the elements that prevent equitable access to transportation--a lifeline to opportunity--for students in the United States. "Extending equitable access to transportation means that first, every child can access transportation; and second, they can access a transportation mode that meets that child's unique needs, connecting them to school, support services, extracurricular activities, and other critical parts of childhood," EATAC stated in the report, "Transportation as an Opportunity Lifeline." Throw back Thursday circa 1987 in Ohio. Despite the odds of poverty, systemic discrimination, ELL, and minority these two former migrant students went on to become a college professor 👩🏫 and a cardiologist 👩⚕️. Structured systems of support, high quality education and safety nets made it possible. Programs such as Headstart, after school programs, childcare, access to health care and food, and education programs under Title 1 and Title 3 levels the playing field. #migranteducation #migranted #bilingualeducation #sisepuede #bilingual #title1 #title3

Listen to Children’s Voice: Protect our future On the Day of the African Child celebration 2024, children from different parts of South Sudan gathered in a children’s symposium titled "Listen to our voices. Protect our future!" organised by the Joining Forces alliance members - Save the Children, Plan International, World Vision, together with the Child Rights Coalition. The hybrid forum brought children from across the country together in person and online to raise various issues and challenges they face and discuss how these should be addressed. The forum aimed to provide children with a platform to voice their concerns and bring those to decision-makers and duty-bearers. The theme for DAC 2024, as determined by the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), is Education for all children in Africa (South Sudan): the time is now. It is aligned with the 2024 AU theme, Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa. We spoke to some of the children, and here is what they had to say. Let’s act on our commitments: The time is now! https://lnkd.in/dPjqFZRR Save the Children International All followers
