I’ve just finished reading ‘Living Service’. There was so much gold in this book. If you are a coach and struggling to grow a thriving coaching practice through service, I strongly recommend you read this book. Melissa lets you see yourself in her journey and recognise that it’s part of the process. This is done with humour and compassion. Two major take away for me on this run through (I know I’m going to read it again); 1] HOW (honesty, openness and willingness). If you want to create a anything - How HONEST are you being with yourself, your coach, your family etc? - How OPEN are you to hear feedback and opportunities? - How WILLING are you to take the action required? 2] what does service mean to me and how am I applying this to my life and business? (I realise that in the past I have had a model of service as volunteering (free) whilst also providing a service in my salaried role as a teacher/ headteacher. What I realised I needed to do was merge this meaning to allow me to be of service in life and business. #coaching #service #prosperous_coach #living_service

WHY I am a consultant now, sand in my face and bad pottery.  After 20 years of commitment to education and social services as a true believer, sometimes martyr, occasionally radical evangelist, and nearly 16 of those years in fundraising, today I have launched my consulting business. I loved most of the months I spent in every job I had, from the full time work in larger agencies to pro-bono work with small ones. There are so many things- and so many PEOPLE- l I loved about it. But at the end, I didn’t love me at all anymore. Not because of the work, because I was struggling with some deeper questions that affected my work. So, with many tears, I left. And I had no idea exactly what I would do next. All I knew for sure, is that whatever I decided to do, even little things every day, let alone a way to earn a living, when I chose it it would not be because I had to. It would not be because I fell into it. Whatever it was I was going to do, I would know exactly WHY. EVERY why. It took four months. I joined the Clay Guild and threw some pots. I worked on remodeling some small areas of my house. I employed coaches to help me get in shape both physically and mentally. I bought a plant that is notoriously hard to keep alive and learned and focused on keeping it alive. (It looks darn good, I have to say. Way better than my pottery!) For a part of my life I was a playwright so I wrote a play for the first time in 18 years. (Spoiler alert: It was terrible! My chops weren’t just rusty, they were barely a RUST STAIN!). I started a Duolingo streak that today is 323 days long. And every day, I thought about what to do, but more importantly WHY to do it. Why to do it for me. Why for all the people it might affect. Why to do it for my son. And not just those “Why I shoulds” but Why I thought I COULD do it. And at some point I remembered sand in my face and my thousand toddler “why?” questions all along. Even the poor guy that was teaching me pottery got sick of me asking “Why do it that way? Why not this way?” I thought he might actually kick me at one point but he said, “If your pots were better I might answer all your questions.”  That guy is awesome!!!  And 33 more why’s later, I finally came to this decision to be a consultant. I launched the Global Coach Community several years ago, and we start each week with a practical open-agenda Q&A Check-in. On yesterday's call, we explored a challenge many coaches face: How do I set the pricing for my coaching offer? I realized several years ago that my measure of fulfillment as a coach was directly correlated to how invested the people I was working with were to the change they came to me looking for help with. And "invested" looks different for every person. It's about time, finances, duration, focus, and presence on the calls, as well as a commitment to follow through on their commitments during the time between our calls. Give me a handful of those to work with every year, and my love of coaching cup will be full!
