I get asked this question almost every day: “How much should I charge as a ghostwriter?” The vast majority of freelance ghostwriters are overworked and underpaid. To break free, you need to understand the Ghostwriter Income Staircase: Level 1: Charging Per Word This is the “accepted” form of monetization for writing things like: • Blog posts • Press releases • Even newsletters If you’re at this level, you think: “Nobody makes a living as a writer.” WRONG! Escape Level 1 as quickly as you can! --- Level 2: Charging Per Hour This is the default model. Unfortunately, your income is directly tied to "effort." Which means: • You have no reason to create efficiencies • You have no reason to care about output • You "waste time" to rationalize "charging more" Up we go! --- Level 3: Charging Per Month Charging per month isn’t much better than charging per hour. It just means: • You get paid more upfront • You “lock-in” more hours • Income becomes more predictable You may even earn LESS than if you'd just charged hourly. Let's keep ascending. --- Level 4: Charging Per Asset Ah, now we’re getting somewhere! When you charge per asset, your success isn’t measured by: • Time • Effort • “Month” Instead, success is measured by: Not having the asset → creating the asset. Zero to 1 moment. --- Level 5: Charging Per Outcome This is the ultimate goal. It can play out in two ways: • Profit-sharing • Equity Both of these vehicles are typically rare and hard to unlock early in your career. --- My recommendation: Accelerate to Level 4 as quickly as possible, then stay there and stack cash: • Raise your prices • Create efficiencies • Build financial security Then, start looking for unique opportunities to reach up to Level 5. - 📌 If you’re brand new to ghostwriting, I would love to be your mentor.
