Dharma’s Poonawala connection Bollywood always has something interesting to offer. Adar Poonawala buying a 50% stake in Dharma is an interesting twist. Poonawala’s Serene Productions has entered into and agreement to invest Rs. 1000 Crore (Approx $120 Million) for a 50% stake. Poonawala is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer; this is a stride in a different direction. Will it upset the apple cart? Bollywood cinema has seen a slowdown, it has been grappling to provide a big hit for a while. South Indian cinema has been dominating screens, in theatres and homes. Streaming services like #Netflix, #Prime Video, #Disney+ Hotstar provide formidable alternative to cinema goers. Fresh blood in the media and entertainment space is a positive sign. The industry is notorious for its operational and fiscal discipline and that could be a point of improvement for everyone. It would be interesting to watch the first film that comes out of this joint partnership; more than that, I would love to see a vaccine product integration in one. Do you think it’s a match made in Karan Johar heaven or is it a step too far for Poonawalla? #media #entertainment #ott #streaming PC: The Hindu

Is Netflix going to laugh all the way to the bank with the Great Indian Kapil show? The OTT space is crowded in India. There are of course the global players like Netflix and Amazon and then local national and regional players trying to get a pie of the Indian viewer’s attention and pocket. Netflix has had highs and lows in their journey in the Indian market. Its total income grew an impressive 24% and net profit grew 75% YoY in FY’23. But Amazon and Disney are tough competitors with a larger subscriber base. (Source: Economic Times https://lnkd.in/gnzJ8hff) For all those who understand the Indian consumer knows the value of localization to win their hearts, minds and their wallets. McDonalds has a McAloo Tikki burger and Amazon Alexa is available in multiple Indian languages. Now the Kapil Sharma show is as mass and as local as it can get to capture a pie of the Indian market that never considered Netflix. A widely popular show running on National TV since years, especially catering to the Hindi speaking belt could be a game changer for Netflix. Do you think this is a masterstroke?
