The European Union is leading a global shift with the #EUDR, requiring due diligence on human rights and environmental impacts in agricultural supply chains. With its latest announcement, the Commission has proposed giving concerned parties additional time to prepare. If approved this proposal would make the law applicable on 30 December 2025 for large and medium companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises. If you are preparing for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), this EU website has important information and resources. For EUDR compliance, the clock starts ticking on December 30th, 2024. Note 1: For those accustomed to using the term "Country of Origin," it's time to get familiar with the term "Land of Origin." This term is more specific, referring to the exact geographic points or polygons of actual production within a country. Note 2: Did you know that beef importers into the EU will need to have evidence of the entire cattle lifecycle, including the feed they consumed? This feed often includes soy or palm oil derivatives—two other commodities on the EUDR list. Can the food industry manage this level of traceability complexity today? Want to know more, ask us. The European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a significant legislative measure adopted by the European Union aimed at combating global deforestation and forest degradation. ® 🗝 Key Objectives 👉 Prohibition of Deforestation-Linked Products: The EUDR prohibits the importation and sale of products linked to deforestation or forest degradation. This includes commodities such as soy, palm oil, beef, leather, cocoa, coffee, and wood, along with products derived from these commodities. 👉 Due Diligence Requirements: Companies importing or trading the specified commodities within the EU are required to carry out due diligence to ensure that their supply chains are free from deforestation. This includes obtaining detailed information on the sources of the products and assessing the risk of deforestation associated with them. 👉 Traceability & Transparency: The regulation mandates that companies ensure full traceability of the commodities back to the plot of land where they were produced. This aims to provide greater transparency and accountability in the supply chain. 👉 Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Importers and traders must conduct risk assessments to evaluate the likelihood that the products they deal with are linked to deforestation. They are also required to take necessary measures to mitigate any identified risks. 👉 Reporting and Compliance: Companies are obligated to report their due diligence practices and findings to relevant authorities. Non-compliance with the regulation can lead to significant penalties, including fines and restrictions on market access. 🚀 Implications The EUDR is expected to have wide-ranging implications for global supply chains, especially for countries and industries heavily reliant on the export of the specified commodities. By enforcing stricter standards on deforestation, the regulation aims to drive positive environmental changes, promote sustainable land use, and contribute to the global fight against climate change. 👩🚒 Challenges While the EUDR is a crucial step toward reducing deforestation, it faces several challenges: 👉 Implementation and Enforcement: Ensuring effective implementation and enforcement across all EU member states can be complex and resource-intensive. 👉 Impact on Smallholders: There is concern about the potential adverse impact on smallholders and small-scale producers who may find it difficult to comply with the stringent requirements of the regulation. 👉 Market Dynamics: The regulation could lead to shifts in global trade patterns, with some countries and companies possibly seeking markets with less stringent deforestation controls. Overall, the European Deforestation Regulation represents a bold and necessary move to address one of the critical drivers of environmental degradation. Its success will depend on the commitment and cooperation of various stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and civil society organizations. #EUDR #UNSDG #deforestation #netzero

On 6 February 2024, the European Commission announced it would withdraw its proposal for the Sustainable Use Regulation (#SUR), delaying by years urgently needed action to reduce the use and risks of synthetic #pesticides in Europe. 125 organisations, including environmental groups, beekeepers, farmer organizations, and trade unions, signed a joint statement condemning the failure of the EU to adopt an ambitious #pesticidereduction regulation. Backtracking on #environmental ambition is the wrong answer to the #farmersprotest across Europe, and will only further lock #farming in unsustainable practices that impact farmers’ health while destroying #biodiversity and the #ecosystems on which our #food production depends. We call on the European Commission to keep the focus on the real issues faced by #farmers, including fair incomes, while accelerating the transition towards resilient #foodsystems and ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all. An ambitious regulation at the European level for reducing #pesticide use, aligned with the #FarmtoFork objectives and the post-2020 Global Biodiversity targets, is urgently needed to make this transition possible and must remain a priority of the next #EU mandate. The EU's new deforestation regulation (EUDR), aiming to combat climate change and biodiversity loss, is reshaping global trade and posing significant challenges for farmers across continents. Key Points: ◾ The EUDR affects seven key commodities: coffee, cocoa, soy, palm oil, cattle, rubber, and wood. ◾ Compliance requires tracing the exact origins of these commodities, ensuring they aren't linked to deforested lands post-2020. Impact on Emerging Economies: ◾ Countries like Indonesia, Ethiopia, and Honduras are significantly affected due to their high dependency on these exports. ◾ Farmers are mapping their lands to comply with the new law, crucial for continuing exports to Europe. Challenges for Farmers: ◾ The complexity of mapping and documenting land ownership and use is a significant hurdle. ◾ Smallholder farmers, often in remote areas, lack the resources and awareness to comply. Find out in this Bloomberg News article the challenges of implementing green policies on a global scale and how a data company like Meridia assists farmers in mapping their land to address the implications of the EU's deforestation regulation. https://lnkd.in/esWEd9vt #ClimateResilience #EUDeforestationRegulation #Agriculture #SmallHolderFarmers Video from Bloomberg News

Are you aware that toxic pesticide use poses serious threats, leaving residues not only on products but also contaminating playgrounds and can be found even in human hair? Increasing evidence links exposure to pesticides to severe illnesses like cancer and Parkinson, with farmers and farm workers being the first affected. This widespread exposure also contributes to the alarming decline in insect biodiversity, affecting crucial pollinators like bees and other insects crucial for our food production. 🌱 The EU holds a pivotal opportunity to address this issue by implementing legally binding reduction goals in their upcoming legislative cycle. Vote for an EU parliament that listens to the more than one million citizens asking for ambitious pesticide reduction, and takes action for a healthier environment for people, children, and future generations. 🌍 #VoteFutureEU #GoodFoodGoodFarming https://lnkd.in/eENKexzE Friends of the Earth Europe Slow Food EU Food Policy Coalition ICLEI Europe Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) European Environmental Bureau IFOAM Organics Europe Buy Better Food Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe European Coordination Via Campesina

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐄𝐔𝐃𝐑) 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝟑𝟎 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 Yesterday the European Parliament approved the coming into force of the EUDR with one year. The EUDR aims to fight climate change and biodiversity loss by preventing the deforestation related to EU consumption of products from cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm-oil, soya, wood, rubber, charcoal and printed paper. The postponement came in response to concerns raised by EU member states and businesses that they would not be able to fully comply with the rules if applied as of end of 2024. Large operators and traders will now have to comply with the obligations stemming from the EUDR as of 30 December 2025, whereas micro- and small enterprises will have until 30 June 2026. The European Parliament also accepted several amendments. The most significant amendment is the creation of a new category of countries posing “no risk” on deforestation, in addition to the existing three categories of “low”, “standard” and “high” risk. No risk countries are defined as countries with stable or increasing forest area development. Regarding no risk countries minimal or almost no due diligence obligations will apply. With my colleague Danai Bagourda I have written a factsheet on the most important obligations under the EUDR (see below). #EUDR #climatechange
