When my brother first joined the fire department and joined the union, he got everyone in the family a t-shirt. I was honestly a little bummed, because everyone got a union t-shirt but me and he explained it was because I was in HR and thought I wouldn't be able to support unions openly. That was over 15 years ago, but I think a sense still lingers that HR professionals are inherently anti-union. I'd say this is certainly far from universal. Many HR professionals understand and appreciate the power of unions, even if they aren't openly pro-union. Today is Labor Day, and we recognize the amazing work of labor organizations that have reshaped the workplace for better conditions and fairer wages. We still have a lot of work to do to make the workplace better for everyone. And that of course will include the continued work of labor organizations. I also believe HR and internal leadership actively working to make the workplace better plays an important role as well. My work with The Wounded Workforce™ is also about making the workplace better and I am heartened to see more and more people working to make their organizations more #TraumaInformed. Instead of focusing on union or non-union, let's all focus on making the workplace better and more equitable for everyone. And supporting the organizations and individuals who are hard at work to make it happen. And I challenge you to consider today, in honor of the work that has already been done, what you can do personally to make the workplace a little better. #laborday #traumainformedworkplace #hrcommunity #unions
