What next with the temporary protection of Ukrainians? Policy workshop at Clingendael, Den Haag Today, I addressed an eminent policy workshop at the Clingendael Institute in Den Haag on the topic "Options after the TP", temporary protection for Ukrainians. It was attended by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Asylum and Migration, the Ukrainian ambassador in the Netherlands and the Dutch ambassador in Kyiv. It was an open, honest and fair discussion weighing all options in the light of various migration scenarios, return, a fresh outflow over winter (based on the dramatic vulnerability of the energy system and driven by vaning resilience of the people) or large-scale displacement in the worst case of major Russian advances. Decisions on EU policy, national options or possibly a combination of both are only expected early 2025.

What makes this so tragic is that there is an abundance of land in Ontario's North. I saw it with my own eyes, rolling hills that are unsuitable for agriculture but could host human development. So why are we developing farm land in Southern Ontario when the North has space? Sudbury and Thunder Bay are zero growth cities that have not grown substantially in decades. Resulting in people moving south to places like Toronto looking for work and housing. But as inflation and food prices sky rocket, converting farm land to other uses like industry and housing will make things worse.
