“Can i help you?” At 17 I started my retail sales career at Nordstrom. I was quickly yanked into the back room after uttering these words to a customer. “That is the lamest thing you can say, don’t ever say it again. You are asking a closed yes/no question. It kills conversations” I never did, learning every variation to greet a customer with an opened ended question I could conjur. Dialogue was up! Sales were up. Now at trade shows I hear the same phrase used by seasoned sales folks. Don’t do it. Best answer I ever heard from a customer “why do I look sick?” You have 5 seconds to get a persons attention at an event. Think of five conversation starters you can use. They can’t say yes no! That is the key. “What are you currently using for garbage lids?” “Why do dumpster lids break?” “What do you think of our dumpster lids?” How many dumpster lids do you replace a year? You slowed down, what are you thinking?” Bonus tip. The customers name is not “Hey”. #salestip

It took me a year to adjust from working in a #manufacturing plant to working on a cross-functional business team in a corporate office. I eventually embraced "the Customer" but had some interesting moments along the way. Scene: Working as the ops manager on the Betty Crocker business many years ago. One of my Sales teammates drops by my office… Sales: Hey, how’s it going? Me: Good, you? Sales: Great. I’ve got a question for you. Me: Okay, what do you have? Sales: Could any of your plants make a holiday SKU for a customer that would be two pouches of sugar cookie mix inside a decorative metal holiday canister? Me: No, but give me some time and I’ll figure it out. Sales: Uh, okay. How much time? Me: You haven’t already sold this into a customer, have you? Sales: Me: Sales: Could I get 7,000 cases? By late October? Me: Get out of my office. #cpg #customerservice

At my first sales job, I learned a valuable lesson about attention to detail and accountability. I made a critical mistake, quoting the wrong price to a customer. However, I took responsibility post-contract signing, approaching my manager to rectify the error. His advice to learn from the mistake and resolve the situation with the customer was invaluable.
