There’s often a disconnect between the skills young people acquire in school and those required for workplace success. For students in low socio-economic status schools, this can be further exacerbated by limited access to professional role models and work opportunities. Many of the students who attend our programs have a limited knowledge of diverse career pathways and a diminished sense of entitlement to pursue further education or careers beyond their local community. So our ‘Aspirations’ program was designed to familiarise these high school students with the working world and equip them with the skills to build a successful career. Recently a team of volunteer mentors from Ventia worked with students from Lurnea High School, and students’ confidence relating to “the statement "I feel prepared for the world of work” skyrocketed from 10% to 100%! 💥 while “I can see myself in a workplace like the one my mentor works in” soared from 20% to 90%! 🌟 Fab work by Emma Trueman, Sarah Norbury, Jessica Maher, Zak Dib, Chris Greedy, REZA ANSARI and John Truszewski 👏 #mentors #skilledvolunteers #mentoringmatters Thanks Guy Cuthbertson & Samantha Tan

"With Places to Grow, we have Slovak, Hungarian, and Czech organizations working together. Many similar things have happened to all of us in the past decades, and I think we face similar challenges in early childhood development and other areas. Therefore, if we can find good answers to questions or challenges, it is worth sharing them" - Deák Éva, Partners Hungary Foundation. This is the value of Places to Grow. 🌍✨ Youth Exchange in Ponte de Lima, Portugal: Breaking the silence✨🌍 Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a youth exchange program in beautiful Ponte de Lima, Portugal, where we tackled one of the most pressing issues of our time: domestic violence and human rights. Over several days, we engaged in meaningful discussions about the different forms of abuse—physical, emotional, psychological, and financial—and how they impact individuals and communities. Through interactive workshops, we explored the importance of human rights as a foundation for addressing and preventing these issues. What made this experience unforgettable was the power of connection and teamwork. As a group of young people from diverse backgrounds, we worked together, building trust and understanding. Activities focused on leadership, empathy, and collective problem-solving, helping us develop practical skills to address such critical topics in our own communities. The exchange was not just about learning—it was about creating a safe space to share stories, listen to one another, and find solutions together. I leave this experience feeling empowered, inspired, and ready to take action. Thank you to the amazing organizers, facilitators, and participants for making this exchange so impactful. Together, we are stronger, and together, we can create change. 💜 #YouthExchange #HumanRights #DomesticViolence #Leadership #Empowerment #PonteDeLima #YouthForChange

"We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience". This famous quote rings especially true for intercultural learning. When I was a volunteer at a school in Sweden, I initially struggled in my role. I was waiting for the teachers to give us, international volunteers, tasks and clear instructions. Meanwhile, the teachers would just welcome us in their classrooms or activities and didn't seem to pay any attention to us. I felt lost and confused. It wasn't until I took time to reflect on this experience that I realized there must have been a cultural difference at play that was creating barriers. After a meeting with one of the teachers, it turned out the educators were expecting us, volunteers, to take initiative in class and break activities. Sweden, being a truly egalitarian nation, highly encourages a proactive attitude on all levels. In contrast, Alessandra, another volunteer, and I came from more hierarchical cultures and were used to being told what to do by superiors. This newfound awareness allowed me and Alessandra to approach our roles with more openness and show more leadership. We each took charge of running a creative daily workshop during the longest break, which were real hits among the students! This experience highlighted the importance of creating space for reflection in learning. Experiences themselves don't teach anything; reflecting on them does. With that in mind, the Starline program allows young people to not only experience a whole new world out there, but also reflect, process, and formulate takeaways that will benefit them throughout their lives. If you are curious to know more about the Starline program, don’t miss the information evening which will take place online This Thursday, April 4th at 7:30 pm EST: https://lnkd.in/ddPJhn2y Nathalie Danon #interculturallearning #culturalawareness #reflection #thestarlineprogram
