#uwezoaward2023Winners HANANASIF SECONDARY SCHOOL (KINONDONI MUNICIPAL, DAR ES SALAAM) COMMUNITY CHANGE PROJECT; PEACE OF MIND "We named our Community Change Project PEACE OF MIND because we wanted to have a society with sustainable development and which embraces peace. We believe that peace brings light of development in our brains. A brain with light has peace of mind. The project started with fundraising by making Hana charcoal (paper charcoal) and also making Hananasif students' Identity Cards. We organized students to attend Bonanza and also organised a competition with Tambaza Secondary School. Through these projects, we were able to get TZS 280,000. Since we had funds we were able to do community services by using the funds we had collected. These projects included buying and giving out sanitary pads to about 500 girls, visiting the Maunga Orphanage Center, buying and giving mattresses to the Hananasif secondary school administration, cleaning toilets, repairing furniture of the classrooms and also organizing students' work competitions. In all these activities we used TZS 210,300. We also organized a blood donation, a dusters-making project, as well as a road safety project which did not cost us any money. Despite of some challenges faced in our club during the overall process of implementing the Peace of Mind project, most of what we had wished went as we had planned. We were able to accomplish many things we had arranged. One of the challenges we faced, was some weak/poor participation from members. In the whole of our Community Change Project we raised TZS 280,000 and the amount we used was TZS 210,300. The remaining money was used as transport during the UWEZO BONANZA screening and we have planned to use the other money remaining for our Chain Community Change Project next year. #uwezoprogram #uwezoaward #uwezokinara #uwezoclub #chukuahatuaoneshauwezo #youths #education #talents #creativity

Today is #WorldBicycleDay, and why not celebrate it by supporting our bicycle fundraising campaign, ‘Ride to the Future’? “Ride to the Future” is a bicycle fundraising campaign for Binti Shupavu Scholars in Morogoro rural areas who face significant challenges, including walking long distances to and from school every day. Approximately 40% of Binti Shupavu scholars in Morogoro walk at least 16 km daily, walking around four hours to school and another four hours from school to home. This hinders their participation in school, leading to a loss of interest, increased dropout rates, and poor performance. GLAMI, in partnership with @abcimpact, is working to address this challenge by providing bicycles to these young and determined Binti scholars. However, we cannot do it alone; we need your support. By contributing to our cause, you are helping Binti Scholars in Morogoro rural areas attend school on time, ensuring safe and reliable transportation, increasing class engagement, and providing more study time for our scholars. Join us in making a difference! Donate today to help provide bicycles for Binti Scholars in Morogoro. Your support will transform their educational journey. For local contributions, please use our Vodacom Lipa Number 54278725, the name Girls Livelihood Initiative will appear. For International Contributions please click on the link below to donate. https://lnkd.in/e26ZZikG Share this post to spread the word! #RideToTheFuture #BintiShupavuBikeCampaign #EmpoweringEducation #GLAMI #OneRideBigImpact

To the LinkedIn community, it's late on giving Tuesday but early in the holiday season! I write as a community member and leader at Liceo Aguadillano Inc, a non-profit, parent-owned 43-year experiment in community-led education. The mission: bilingual academic mastery in a healthy, non-political, non-sectarian, and local community values environment. There are a lot of depressing updates coming out of Puerto Rico over the past several years; wrecked infrastructure, governance & corruption crisis, demographic challenges, austerity, and a crime wave. That's all real and not to be dismissed. What we as a school community have decided- To fight and die on the hill of hope for our children. We are on a crisis footing trying to push back against the trends in decline by adapting teaching methodologies, leveraging the blessing of our school's infrastructure and mounting sustained campaigns for both recruitment and community retention. We're also subject to the same challenges that affected smaller schools over the past several years, (pandemic, inflation, rising costs for goods and services). Our new board of directors (includes me) is trying to make a decisive, high risk, high reward investment in our facility and build an endowment to position ourselves as the school of excellence in our region. It's hard to achieve these goals when average salaries for teachers stand at less than $1500/month, (yes, you read that right), and the ability of community members with similar salaries limits the ability to finance needed work via tuition increases. This is where I invite anyone on this network to consider supporting us or checking us out for more info. If you do decide to donate, we appreciate any comments or thoughts you provide at the time as well (and do include where you heard about us!) If there are any community members who have detailed advice/mentorship to offer or are interested in a deeper relationship with our institution after checking us out, please reach out to me directly, I'd love to discuss. To all a good night. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year, Happy Holidays All. -Alex https://lnkd.in/dA3HCzAR

How does your industry contribute to charity in society? Many book publishers contribute to communities in many different ways, for example: Direct donations of books: many of the publishers donate books to public libraries, schools, hospitals and various organizations that work with audiences in situations of risk or lack. These books are used as learning and enrichment material for people who were not able to purchase them themselves. Especially now during the war in Israel, many book publishers donated textbooks to students who were evacuated from their homes in the north and south of the country. Book publishers set up workshops, courses and reading events aimed at encouraging reading and self-study at no cost. The book publishers offer scholarships and writing workshops and publishing options for writers from vulnerable populations. Financial donations: Some of the proceeds from the sale of books are donated to various charitable organizations. A common example is donating the proceeds of books on certain topics to organizations working in that field. Publishing houses initiate special projects, such as book series aimed at raising awareness of various social and cultural issues. Proceeds from the sale of these books may be dedicated to supporting these communities or issues.

Yesterday’s office was at YHA Malham in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, where I was celebrating 70 years of National Parks coming into being thanks to John Dower. This beautiful report on BBC Look North last night sums up why we must preserve these spaces for future generations. It’s scary just how many children never get to experience a National Park or any coastal or rural areas because their families are unable to afford the transport to get them there or the money for a school trip. That’s why projects like the Defra funded Generation Green project and fundraising campaigns like YHA’s No Child Left Behind, are so important. They provide funded stays in youth hostels for children who cannot otherwise afford it. These are life changing experiences. I have seen the power of them myself. I met primary school children from Liverpool yesterday who were staying at the youth hostel in Malham. They hadn’t seen sheep in the countryside before. They were absolutely blown away and kept calling them ‘mushrooms’. The memories of that two day Generation Green fully funded activity break are something I am confident will never leave them. My own son came back from his first school residential to YHA Ilam Hall seven years ago in absolute disbelief that he had ‘dinner for breakfast’. It was a fry up!! Something we still laugh about today. Rather than sending Christmas cards this year, consider donating to the YHA (England & Wales) No Child Left Behind appeal. Your money will provide life changing school trips for thousands of children. I’ll be donating. https://lnkd.in/eYTWaust #YHA #charity #nationalparks #AccesstoNature #GenerationGreen #HeritageandFuture

Let’s each one reach one, this Mandela Day It is a bleak midwinter for the seven million children in South Africa who, according to the non-profit Kasi Angels, do not have proper school shoes – a number that may be overwhelming but is not insurmountable. Simply getting to class should not be a daily hurdle, but it is for millions of learners who have to walk to school without shoes or shoes that are broken or do not fit. This can harm their self-esteem and have an immeasurable impact on their education, with many opting to stay home to avoid the social difficulties it entails. Furthermore, it can lead to various health concerns, from skin conditions to foot pain, poor alignment, and back problems, among others. It does not have to be this way, however. Giving a child the gift of a proper pair of school shoes builds their confidence and gives them a sense of hope for the future, which is vital for a positive learning experience. That’s why, this Mandela Day, CompCare is firmly behind this important initiative, calling on all South Africans to make whatever donation they can – 'each one, reach one’. If each business, family, and individual aims to support at least one learner with a pair of school shoes, we can unlock the power of education for those young boys and girls who are our nation’s future. Since its inception, Kasi Angels has donated over 64 000 pairs of new school shoes, and the foundation intends to reach a goal of one million pairs – a worthy aim if ever there was one. So, if you still have something to give this Mandela Day, let it be a pair of new school shoes for a child in need. With our combined power, we can do more, be more, and care more. Join us in supporting Kasi Angels to make a difference with school shoes and other educational projects. Please visit www.kasiangels.co.za . Our country's future depends on us all.
