Stonehill College has been recognized again this year by The Wall Street Journal for the value it provides students, especially in the areas of career preparation and character development. In the news outlet’s recently released best colleges survey, the College ranked among the top 13 schools in Massachusetts. In terms of student outcomes, the College received a salary impact score of 87 out of 100, an increase over last year’s score. Based on student survey results, the College scored higher this year across all areas of focus including learning opportunities, preparation for career, and learning facilities. In the category of character development, a measure introduced this year, Stonehill earned a high score of 79. This article points out many of the reasons why Black students are choosing HBCUs in higher numbers than in previous years. The issue of attending a welcoming environment cannot be overstated, especially for minority students who oftentimes struggle academically and socially when attending predominantly white institutions. Campus climate is very important and is a key factor for both academic and social integration.

Recently, Paul Fain highlighted the need of youth apprenticeship programs in our workforce in his newsletter “The Job.” He instantly noted that employers need to take a more active role in the U.S. education system to establish career pathways for a broader range of Americans, especially those without four-year degrees. Despite bipartisan support and the pressing demands of the labor market, progress in this area has been slow at best. Noting two Brookings Institute reports (read them here and here), he commented that the best approach to solving this need is through regional, multi-sector coalitions, a goal CareerWise and our partners have been working toward for years.
