 🌍 Today at the High-Level Political Forum 2024 Side Event: Critical Energy Transition Minerals to Accelerate Progress Towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) We're excited to announce UNECE's participation in the HLPF, where we will co-host a side event on Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETMs)in New York, USA. This event, titled "Critical Energy Transition Minerals to Accelerate Progress Towards the SDGs," will be a crucial platform for discussing the integral role of CETMs in achieving the climate ambitions outlined in the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Why CETMs Matter ⁉ CETMs are essential for low-carbon technologies and vital for our climate goals. As demand for these minerals is set to rise significantly, this presents both opportunities and challenges, especially for resource-rich countries. Our event will explore how CETMs can drive economic diversification, value addition, and sustainable development while mitigating socio-environmental conflicts and ensuring fair benefit sharing.   ⚡ UNECE's Leadership: Here in the UNECE Sustainable Energy Division (SED), we are showing the way with frameworks like UNFC (United Nations Framework Classification for Resources) and UNRMS (United Nations Resource Management System). These tools are key to managing critical raw materials efficiently and sustainably. Event Highlights: The event will feature discussions on different regional perspectives, economic and development implications of CETMs, and strategies for managing their demand. We'll also highlight the role of UN initiatives like the UN Working Group on Transforming the Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development and the UN Secretary-General’s Panel on CETMs in supporting just transitions and enhancing global governance. Whether Biden or Trump wins, the US is strategic to actually reducing global emissions. Climate change is a real global issue to be solved, not a national political opportunity. The west has been asleep at the wheel and has allowed China to create monopolies on the critical components of 'renewable' gear used in wind/solar/EVs/heatpumps which are built in China with coal, children in Africa and Russian oil and gas. CDN's "Just Transition" is the perfect example of an ineffective response which is predicted on national politics=climate change virtue signaling at all costs, with no impact on the reduction of global emissions! However, if CDN really wanted to help reduce global emissions it would focus on the export of cleaner than coal inexpensive SK uranium, ON CANDU & BC/AB natural gas! This alone though will not reduce global emissions, the US must lead this in a way that actually reduces global emissions from the largest polluters-the US, India, China & Russia! And finally the US can lead in a different energy philosophy espoused by Nobel winning energy innovator Rodney Allam who advocated for the elimination of emissions in the use of oil and gas, not the elimination of the oil and gas industry itself. He has walked the talk of his philosophy in the create of two startups that use natual gas to create clean energy, NET Power for electricity and 8RH2 for hydrogen/ammonia that can both help with a better response to climate change, but also better responses to both food and energy security.
