I'm honoured to share the stage with Noeleen Donnelly for the opening plenary paper “Dancing Like No One is Looking: LGBTQ+ Visibility, Equity, and Belonging in Digital Automation and Control Systems and Communities” at the TECIS 2024 international conference this Wednesday, 29th May 2024 in SETU. Our plenary paper represents a historic moment as it is the first time that an international automation, control and intelligence systems conference sponsored by International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), an industry/academia federation of over fifty countries, has opened with LGBTQ+ experiences of advanced technologies. The paper highlights the intersection of LGBTQ+ experiences and the emerging new, digitally-enabled world. The work highlights the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and the critical importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (D&I) as the centre around which advanced intelligent technologies should be framed and deployed. The paper explores how biases in AI and digital culture marginalizes LGBTQ+ communities. It underscores the necessity of expanding ED&I efforts to ensure equity and foster a sense of belonging. Methodological guidelines for ED&I and business research in LGBTQ+ communities are provided, advocating for direct engagement with LGBTQ+ stakeholders, including customers, employees, citizens and other groups, by commercial developers and organisations wishing to deploy these advanced systems. Our work also recommends greater use of participative action research approaches in these engagement to ensure that rich data on the experiences of marginalised stakeholder communities drives the development and deployment of technologies such as AI in commercial and public sector applications. Key Highlights of our paper include: - Examination of the intersection of LGBTQ+ experiences with automation and control systems. - Discussion of the role of AI in perpetuating biases against LGBTQ+ individuals. - Advocacy for more inclusive methodologies in D&I research in the digital society and commercial settings. - Highlights IFAC's commitment to D&I principles and that these align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This work contributes to the ongoing discourse on promoting inclusivity and equity in professional and academic spheres, particularly in STEM fields. Join our session and/or contact myself or Noeleen as we work to foster a more inclusive and equitable digital world! #LGBTQ #DiversityAndInclusion #Equity #Automation #AI #Research #AIregulation #aiandsociety #cx #ex For more details see the TECIS programme here:

Perspectives of Men and Women Working in Vector Control in Africa Regarding Barriers and Opportunities for Achieving Gender Inclusivity 'The study highlights significant gender disparities in staffing and leadership within vector control in Africa but also provides insights for stakeholders to develop strategies that promote equitable work environments. Although the benefits of gender inclusivity are broadly recognized, challenges related to cultural norms and societal expectations persist – and should be addressed by incorporating a gender lens that considers the perspectives of both men and women in vector control.' https://lnkd.in/gTUdXkwS

How Social sciences can create innovation ? Yesterday Again ! 🏛 Presentation of The innovation" The game Catch me if you can" about the equality during the evolution of career on line for our partners of ENLIGHT from all Europe ! Authors : Y. Meziani and N.Junca. 🛎 Great moment to share our transfer of theory on discrimination to help colleagues to develop their own soft skills : dealing with discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, age at work... The game is the result of a three-year research and development effort, based on interviews, focus groups, and local, national, and European data (e.g., "La parole des Hommes", RESET, MESR, She Figures).

⚖️#ASBMBAdvocates: Increasing #DEAI in STEM | The ASBMB is committed to being an agent of change, and it advocates for programs and policies that ensure all individuals can fully participate in the U.S. research enterprise. The society supports and produces DEAI-related programming and advocates at the federal level for: ➡️Strengthening research capacity at minority-serving institutions. ➡️Achieving gender equity in STEM by implementing inclusive language, sexual harassment prevention and accountability policies. ➡️Establishing measures, including mentoring plans, to ensure the retention of underrepresented and minoritized students. ➡️Expanding and making better use of re-entry and reintegration supplement awards. Proposals can be submitted to existing NSF programs (for research: EDU Core Research (ECR) and Building Capacity for STEM Education Research (BCSER), Improving Undergraduate STEM education (IUSE), Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE), for systemic change projects for faculty equity: ADVANCE and other programs at NSF) After reviewing the program solicitation or announcement, potential proposers should contact the program for which they want to submit to make sure your project idea inspired by the DCL fits with that program. Proposals can also be submitted to the NSF PAPPG which describes: conference, planning, EAGER, RAPID, RAISE, supplements to existing awards, and travel proposal (You still need to contact the program officer to discuss your idea before submission.) https://lnkd.in/eDyyXB22

It’s worth noting how many findings scientists wanted to be true with a very politically progressive slant are failing replication attempts. 1. Implicit race bias (specifically tests relying on the implicit attitude test or IAT to predict behavior) 2. Stereotype threat (what a shitshow that has been) 3. Racial bias of white doctors against babies born of Black parents And now this… The lesson: be a scientist and let the data do the talking. Try really hard not to put the thumb on the scale with political preferences. We can help improve lives better if we know what’s truly happening - the exceptional, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let’s not lose the trust of those consuming science.

New findings on gender gaps across institution types and with important implications for progress. "Men considerably outnumber women in physics, engineering, and computer science (PECS) majors, with a recent male-to-female ratio of ~4:1, a stark contrast to the near parity in other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines (1). This gender disparity in PECS carries wide-reaching implications for equity, innovation, and scientific advancement. Analyzing a near-census of >34 million bachelor’s degrees awarded in the US from 2002 to 2022, supplemented with two nationally representative datasets, we provide the first comprehensive study of the gender gap in PECS across higher-education institutions. Institutions serving students with higher math SAT scores have made greater strides in closing PECS gender gaps—both in initial recruitment and retention—whereas those serving students with lower math SAT scores are increasingly struggling. Our findings highlight institutions as strategic leverage points for targeted interventions, particularly to benefit women of color who remain underrepresented even where gender balance is improving."

https://lnkd.in/guYg2rXR On average, women scientists were perceived as more likable than their male counterparts. This increase in likability caused the participants to view the women scientists as more competent and trustworthy. However, there was a difference in participants’ responses based on their own gender. Women participants were more likely to view male scientists favorably, while men were more likely to prefer women scientists.

The #CassReport sheds light on serious concerns, including the impact of ideological bias on treatments and approaches involving children. It underscores a growing issue within scientific discourse: the potential for activism to overshadow objective inquiry. The essence of science is its commitment to truth, which can be compromised when activism becomes a driving force. This is particularly notable in academic circles, where there appears to be a trend of valuing activism, potentially at the expense of unbiased research and exploration. It is crucial for academic institutions, especially those with significant influence, to refocus on their fundamental role of fostering a commitment to unbiased, evidence-based research and truth-seeking, rather than advancing specific political narratives. https://lnkd.in/gNg77HmZ
