On June 23, 2020, we faced an unimaginable loss. Ade Ayodele, a vibrant sports executive, dedicated friend, and cherished member of the Ayodele family, passed away from colon cancer at just 31 years old. Determined to transform our grief into purpose, we channeled our energy into supporting the the V Foundation's Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund. In 2020 alone, we raised $100,000 to advance the understand the biological basis of cancer disparities. Through Facebook fundraisers, runs, and rides, our community united to prevent others from enduring similar heartache. These efforts have evolved into our annual Play for Ade golf tournament, celebrating Ade's passion for golf and mentorship. This year's event was especially memorable as my little 2-year-old Ade picked up a club for the first time, swinging in honor of his late uncle. Yet, our mission is far from complete. Too many young lives, like those of Stuart Scott, Chadwick Boseman, and Virgil Abloh, are cut short by cancer, and we don't know why. I am proud to announce that we donated another $5,000 this year, thanks to the unwavering support of our attendees, sponsors, and community. That was the seed, but we aim to double (or triple or quadruple) our impact again this year. Advanced Warning ⚠️ I thought it only fair because it's that time again to do some good stuff. Yup, I am back on my tractor to raise awareness of how easy and simple it is to be part of potentially saving lives by raising funds for Breast Cancer Research. Last year I set my target for I think £250 and smashed it with the help of friends, family (some who won't be here this year to cheer me on ❤️) and businesses, raising over £800. This year I'm setting my target at £1000, it's big and there's a risk I won't make it but it equates to potentially saving 1000 lives. Hello! I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support this June and July by challenging myself to swim 21 miles (the length of The Channel) to raise £200 for Macmillan Cancer Support. 🏊♀️ Link to fundraiser page below 👇 Why am I doing it? Like so many of us, I know people who have benefited from the amazing practical support Macmillan Cancer provides to people living with cancer. They are incredible!! Macmillan give people with cancer everything they've got. If you're diagnosed, your worries are their worries. They do whatever it takes. But without your help they can't support everyone who needs them. Not only do they help those living with cancer, their families and the cancer workforce, they also raise funds, research cancer care, run public campaigns and influence policy decision-makers. 💚 But the challenge in the UK continues to grow. It's estimated that on average, someone is diagnosed with cancer at least every 90 seconds, so there are more than 3 million people living with cancer, and this is expected to rise to 3.5 million in 2025 and 4 million by 2030. 📈 We're facing huge challenges as the number of people living with cancer is growing, the system can’t keep up, expertise is being lost within the cancer workforce and there are inequalities in the way cancer is treated and diagnosed in the UK. Alongside this, there are changes and opportunities that could be potentially transformative for people with cancer with new technologies, treatments, richer data and information available. Macmillan is working to respond to this environment and make sure they're doing the best they can for people with cancer now and into the future.
