Ducts have an important function, but they are passive so they are only designed to function when other equipment is on. They need HVAC equipment to provide them with the conditioned air for distribution throughout the building. The building envelope must surround, insulate, and seal the conditioned spaces where the ducts provides airflow. Interactions between ductwork and the rest of the building may produce some unexpected effects. Thus, for diagnostics it is important to consider as many of these effects as possible. Duct energy losses and equipment inefficiencies can work together to yield a surprisingly low overall system efficiency. When a furnace meeting the current national minimum standard (80% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is combined with a typical duct system installed in a vented attic or open crawlspace (60% - 75% seasonal efficiency), only about half the heating value of the fuel will actually make it into the heated areas of the building. Heat pumps and air conditioner duct losses are similar in magnitude to furnace duct losses. Two or more of the duct related types of energy losses covered later in this Section, each of which might seem "not too bad" in itself, often add up to higher/unacceptable losses. Generally, the biggest duct related losses are leakage related. Unfortunately, duct leakage has been ignored by builders and HVAC contractors for far too long. When the ANSI/ACCA 5 - 2015 HVAC Quality Installation Specification duct testing and sealing requirements were first introduced in 2007, some contractors wanted to continue ignoring duct leakage and balancing requirements. Their claim was, "my customers have never complained!" 🚿 When to Drain and Flush Your Water Heater for Peak Performance 🚿 As colder months approach, it’s essential to keep your water heater running smoothly. Draining and flushing your water heater removes sediment buildup, improving performance and extending its lifespan. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get the job done: 1️⃣ Turn Off the Heater: Switch off the power to your electric heater or set the gas valve to "pilot" for gas heaters. 2️⃣ Connect a Hose to the Drain Valve: Attach a hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the tank, and run the other end outside or into a drain. 3️⃣ Open the Drain Valve: Open the valve to let the water and sediment flow out. Be careful, as the water will be hot! 4️⃣ Flush with Cold Water: Once the tank is drained, open the cold water supply valve to flush out any remaining sediment. Let the water run for a few minutes. 5️⃣ Close the Valves and Refill: Close the drain valve, remove the hose, and reopen the cold water valve to fill the tank. 6️⃣ Power It Back On: Once the tank is full, turn the power back on or switch the gas valve to the "on" position. Let’s know more about #36: Duct Work Most air conditioning and heating systems require some form of ductwork to channel or direct the air to places where the conditioned air is needed. There are many types of ductwork available and often the ductwork can make a big the difference in your utility bills. For that reason, the ductwork must be designed and installed correctly. A poor installation job will result in poor performance, bad airflow, leaky duct systems, and higher-than-usual utility bills. Another important factor in the installation process is to make sure the ductwork is sized properly. Over-sizing systems cost more and do not maintain the desired air flow and undersized ductwork causes the system to strain mechanically and can be noisy.
