Dutch voters for the European elections are remarkably united in their wish for making agriculture more sustainable. But what that means in practice varies wildly 🔽🇪🇺 This June 6-9, voters for the European parliamentary elections will cast their votes which influence the way the EU will deal with numerous environmental challenges, including the shift to more sustainable agriculture. A survey among Dutch citizens shows a shared wish to make agriculture more sustainable. However, when it comes to concrete measures, such as reducing livestock population or emphasising technological solutions, opinions vary wildly. In an article for de Volkskrant, associate professor Jeroen Candel (Public Administration and Policy Group @WUR) reflects on these results. Candel: “Voters are not making distinct choices. They want more nature-friendly agriculture, but the how is the sore point. Standardizing or pricing emissions would make economic sense, but they find it problematic because it would affect farmers. No better way to enjoy #Copenhagen by combining a long weekend and working hard, being inspired and having fun during #Euroseeds2024. The preparation done together with Stephanie Saade was worth the execution of the more than 40 s(p)eed-date meetings. My summary is: - companies that work smarter together are the progressors of tomorrow. Like inspirational collaborations, recently setup for peas and sugar beet. - without overstepping Gene editing, there's a clear need to improve the profitability of a broader range of European crops (overcoming FSS and attracting investments). One of the solutions: more disruptive innovations and long term private-private collaborations to secure return on investment (throughout the value chain: from seed to feed & food). And if you couldn't participate, I summarised Euroseeds2024 further for you: - in Copenhagen, attracting ~1,300 industry professionals from over 60 countries. Theme: "Exploring collaboration and new frontiers of innovation" - not only showcased cutting-edge innovations but also emphasized the importance of regulatory frameworks and sustainable practices in ensuring a resilient future for agriculture. Here are the key highlights: Innovation Showcase The #InnovActionStage was a standout feature, showcasing 12 groundbreaking technologies designed for modern breeding solutions. Healthycrop was awarded the InnovActor2024 Award. Regulatory Developments - focus was on the new EU Plant Reproductive Material (PRM) Regulation, which emphasizes dynamic conservation and heterogeneous material. With the aim to enhance the flexibility and sustainability of seed practices. - Key discussions also revolved around the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and its implications for the seed industry, particularly concerning efforts to mitigate deforestation linked to EU imports. Sustainability and Future of Agriculture - critical role of plant breeding in reducing carbon emissions and adapting to climate change challenges. Asbjørn Børsting (DAKOFO) presented Denmark’s Green Agreement 2024: how agriculture can lead in sustainability. - A panel debate addressed the need to balance environmental sustainability with economic viability and food security in shaping future agricultural policies in Europe. Leadership Transition Michael Gohn concluded his term as Euroseeds President. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration and commitment shown by members.
