🌬️ What if we could turn thin air into jet fuel? 🌍 I recently read a great article by Shiladitya Ghosh, COO of Mission Zero Technologies, on The Engineer UK, which inspired me to create these slides. They explain how DAC works, the challenges involved, and why we’re so excited about it! At the Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC), we’re collaborating with Mission Zero Technologies on the UK’s first DAC plant at The University of Sheffield. What’s even more exciting? We’re working towards producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) straight from the air! ✈️ 👇 Let me know your thoughts on DAC and its potential. P.S. Repost this to help those looking to learn about net zero technologies. #SustainableEnergy #DAC #SAF #Innovation #CarbonCapture #NetZero

Is hydrogen the answer to aviation’s sustainable aviation challenge? Can it replace carbon-based fuels as a power source for larger aircraft, and what role can it play alongside other disruptive technologies such as electric, hybrid-electric and biofuels? Several companies – from Airbus, and Honeywell to innovative start-ups including Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, Fokker Next Gen – are investing in and investigating hydrogen propulsion solutions. We bring together four experts in the field to discuss the substance’s potential to truly change the industry’s future, and the challenges involved in commercialising its supply. 📅 Date: Sep 25, 2024 ⏲ Time: 3:00 PM #SustainableAviation #Hydrogen #LH2

Flight path to 2050: Universal Hydrogen. By Edward Laity In 2023 H2 View reported that the hydrogen-powered flight industry was taking off. Now, work is being done both on the ground and in the skies to ensure hydrogen progress in aviation stays airborne. The aviation industry accounted for around 2% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2023¹, showcasing the need to decarbonise the sector, likely to grow as other sectors begin to draw closer to Net Zero operations. To lower emissions developers are turning to alternative propulsion methods. It has been estimated zero-emission propulsion will require between 600 and 1,700TWh of clean energy by 2050 across the globe, with about 89-96% of the energy being used for hydrogen-powered flight¹. https://lnkd.in/dFUr6mbK

When we consider the scope and scale of ambition this Cranfield University £69M doesn’t compare with the Japanese METI announcement of $33bn to develop a Hydrogen powered aircraft by 2035 - it does however lead to technology which can be shared; “manufacturing, storing, transporting the hydrogen needed at scale, at a workable cost whilst keeping sustainable credentials are all major challenges” https://lnkd.in/g5mbVvSF

As Jet Zero Council visits Cranfield University, and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions for the focused session on Hydrogen Aviation, as a True Zero Emissions option. And given the backstory from Japan with New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) support of $33bn for Regional Hydrogen powered aircraft, Aerospace Technology Institute has seen there is an option to protect Aerospace at a National Level. https://lnkd.in/edsE5cit #Hydrogen #Aviation #LH2 #SustainableAviation #JetZeroCouncil
