#WOLVEStrappedbyPolitics. Brussels, 21 November 2024 – Environmental Association Green Impact, together with Great Lakes and Wetlands, denounced the lack of science-backing and a breach of democratic process stemming from the European Commission’s proposal to weaken the legal protection of the European Grey wolf (Canis lupus). The associations call on Mikaël Poutiers, the Secretary General of the Bern Convention,  not to allow a vote at the forthcoming Standing Committee December meeting. Hundreds of scientists and the Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe/IUCN Specialist Group advocate against the downlisting and therefore against the plan put in place by the European Commission and affecting European continent States not only the EU. Science, not politics, should drive nature conservation legislation in Europe - as consolidated Rules say.
