Future Cleantech Festival Preview | In transit to a net-zero 2050: our Transport Chapter Aviation and shipping are two of the hardest-to-abate segments of the transport sectors. Currently, these two segments are responsible for ~5% of global annual CO2 emissions. The role of shipping and aviation will continue to rise in the coming years, as the global south rightfully develops and the world’s population continues to grow, but the imperative to reduce their impact on the environment is clear. But how far are we on technical developments? What actions are required on the policy front? This year, our Future Cleantech Festival will highlight the key challenges and the most effective technical and policy approaches in tackling emissions of heavy transport. 🌍 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘄 🚢 Here is my take-home message from the Marine Innovation Summit 2024 that I followed today. The maritime industry has a critical role to play in achieving net-zero GHG emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O) by 2050. The challenge? Replacing the consumption of 𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 with cleaner alternatives.   The technology is already here: 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐬 like methanol and ammonia are ready, and the engines can handle them. No need for new vessels. But the roadblocks are clear: these fuels are expensive, infrastructure is lacking, and the business case is still emerging.   Yet the transition is 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 not just for the environment, but for the long-term 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 of the maritime industry. We also need to ensure that these new energy sources are safe for both crew and surroundings.   The industry is moving too slowly. We need to 𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰 by: 1. Reducing consumption. 2. Adopting new energy sources. 3. Maximizing efficiency.   A key element in this summit was the call for 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 and regulations. Right now, rules are fragmented—varying by nation and region. We have signed of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the #SMACITE and #GreenCo Erasmus + projects through which we aim to revolutionize the sustainability of #SmartCities. GreenCo is dedicated to addressing the environmental challenges posed by digital advancements. By focusing on green IT and computing, GreenCo tackles #DigitalPollution, promotes efficient energy consumption, and champions #ewaste recycling. Their mission is to educate about the environmental impact of excessive data use and offer practical, easy-to-implement solutions to mitigate these effects. In tandem, SMACITE is pioneering Smart City technologies that collect and utilize data through advanced IT products and applications. The integration of GreenCo's eco-friendly practices ensures that these technological advancements are sustainable, reducing their environmental footprint. This partnership highlights the synergy between the two projects: SMACITE's technological innovations and GreenCo's environmental strategies.
