Today, 18 March, 2024, is observed as Global Recycling Day. The idea is to raise awareness to people on the need to reduce, reduce and recycle resources or materials so that we dump lesser items to the landfills which are hazardous to the environment and human health due to leaks. Landfills also release methane due to decomposing waste that contributes greatly to global warming as a GHG. The Theme for this 2024 is Recycling Heroes. There is an urgent need for recycling heroes whose stories in their individual lives can inspire others to follow suit and lead to a larger movement against dumping waste recklessly. Many of these recycling heroes separate dry and wet waste at their homes daily, compost their wet waste and recycle their dry waste comprising of plastic or paper mainly with NGOs working on this front. One of the NGOs in Pune doing such a stellar job is ProEarth Ecosystems headed by Anil Gokarn. We have featured them in our NGOs in Focus section. They take care of Garden Waste and E-Waste as well. For more such information on such NGOs please visit our WIOF Website at: https://lnkd.in/d7ZNr4A and subscribe to us to be part of a community which can raise awareness and protect our planet Earth, the only place in the vast universe that we can call home. This video is the exact reflection of what ‘consistency’ and ‘hard work’ looks like. In 6.5 years @beachpleaseindia together with @kalambemalhar have collected and disposed of more than 8 million kgs of waste. Do you consider waste segregation as one's responsibility?♻️Tell us in the comments below. 👉 You can volunteer them by joining the community @beachpleaseindia on Instagram. #BeachPleaseIndia #MithiRiver #PlasticPollution #Environment #Sustainability #Transformation #SwachhBharat #CleanUp [Malhar Kalambe, Beach Please India, Waste segregation, Recycle Waste, Sustainable, Swach Bharat]

What sparks the courage to leave a promising career in astrophysics for waste management? For Mr. Shirshendu Shekhar Das, it was the undeniable urgency of tackling plastic pollution. Starting with Sunday cleanups along the Brahmaputra, this citizen-led initiative has evolved into a full-fledged movement, empowering communities, transforming perceptions, and creating sustainable livelihoods for waste workers. Highlights include: 1. Over 1.5 lakh kilos of waste saved from landfills. 2. 1,200+ households practicing effective waste segregation. 3. Livelihood opportunities for informal waste workers. This journey is proof that change begins with a single step. SDGs Addressed: SDG 3 - Good Health And Well Being SDG 6 - Clean Water And Sanitation SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities And Communities SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption And Production SDG 13 - Climate Action We are committed to bringing you stories of many such real heroes solving grassroots problems. Happy Global Recycling Day♻️🌎🌱 Often travellers leave their waste behind while visiting Himalayas. This impacts the host communities where they often do not have proper waste processing/recycling facilities around. Watch Pradeep Sangwan, an environment enthusiast initiated building Material Recovery Facilities across Himachal Pradesh. Here the waste can be segregated and re-used for various applications such as building material for road construction. Check-out his story on PLuc.TV📺 #recycling #GlobalRecyclingDay #environment #sustainable #recovery #waste #reuse [GlobalRecyclingDAy, Environment, Sustainable, Recovery, Reuse, Waste]

This year, the theme of World Environment Day is - Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. like every year, we witness a number of activities undertaken to celebrate the Day. A good gesture to create awareness among the community on world Environment Day. Along with this it needs stringent policies and strict implementation of such policy and Act to meet the agenda of Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. I believe that in Urban India and also in rural India, it is a must to actively work on banning Plastics. I am sure, all of us in this platform are aware of BAN on SINGLE USE OF PLASTICS ITEMS by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) vide the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021. It came into force on July 1, 2022. Despite this, Single use plastics are massively used everywhere and anywhere. Plastics are getting into land fills, water bodies, flora and fauna, forest and it takes 20 to 500 years to decompose. It causes serious implications on the ecosystem. Do you do this restoration of land is possible, is this possible to maintain the biodiversity without addressing the crisis. Then where the problem lies. Due to Today's mindset of NOT IN MY BACKYARD amongst all of us, it calls for stringent action from the Government towards implementation of the rules. In addition, Other stakeholders must join the Govt to be strategic and plan alternative mechanisms to get rid of dependency on Plastics, take care of those who are dependent on plastic for their livelihood, and encourage reduce the use and recycle of plastic waste. Awareness creation and planting trees to commemorate World Environment Day is not going to work. Posting a pic of Jog Falls, located in Mangalore with beautiful scenic beauty and motivates Let's work to restore the ecosytem to save the environment. #WorldEnvironmentDay #MOEFCC #banonsingleuseofplastic #landfills #landdegradation #WED2024

Monitoring the WASH Model Village Project in Nepal is coming to an end. The project is progressing on schedule and a lot has been done again during the year. Most important takehome messages were: 🩸 Firstly, waste management being a problem and especially sanitary pads being hard to dispose, sanitary pad inicinerators offer a safe and efficient solution in handling difficult waste locally. ♻️ Secondly, usage of plastic waste is increasing also in the rural area. Collection and innovative upcycling of plastic waste is needed. Workshops by the project have been organised and many innovative designs in the schools and communities were observed. 🌱 Thirdly, easy access to water is not only a basic human right but especially in rural areas, it helps households and communities in being more self sufficient with cultivating. Sufficient water also provides opportunities to generate income from growing crops and vegetables. ➡️ Next year the project focuses on water intake improvements and climate change adaptation.

Project Sanjeevani ( Post 5 of 5) As we conclude the series on Project Sanjeevani, our flagship initiative addressing the root causes of waste management and its critical link to climate change, one thing stands clear: it's our behavior and attitude towards the problem that will drive true change. Through #ZeroWasteSchools, #ZeroWasteSocieties, and #ZeroWasteOffices, we’ve created simple, replicable models that have the potential for huge impact. However, community-driven activities also play a key role in keeping the momentum towards a sustainable lifestyle. Initiatives like cleaning drives, Clean Green Visarjan, and door-to-door IEC activities further push us towards our goal of zero waste. Additionally, recyclable collection drives for used clothes, toys, books, etc., help prevent these items from ending up in landfills. Instead, they are upcycled into useful products, creating new livelihoods and reducing our #carbon footprint. At Koru Foundation, we believe that collective action, supported by sustainable models, can make a significant difference. Let's continue working together for a greener, cleaner future. P.S The following video is about how we were able to bring a refreshing change in the lives of thousands of people with the support of #AdityapurNagarNigam #ZeroWaste #SustainableLiving #ProjectSanjeevani #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #CommunityDriven #KoruFoundation #Upcycling #Recycling

In emerging economies where waste management infrastructure is poor and often cannot keep pace with growing populations, #WASTE_PICKERS_ARE_ESSENTIAL for the collection of recyclable materials, they are in the frontline of material recovery, they are among the most vulnerable and marginalized in society, face hazardous working conditions, low wages and human rights abuse. At #eRecycleHUB, we build a socially responsible supply chain for recyclable materials by providing an accessible tool to formalize the role of waste workers and ensure including them in the value chains to create local resilience and secure their right in contributing to the supply of recycled materials ... Together, We can transform the role of informal waste workers to help provide them a safer and a more dignified and decent working environment and improve their livelihoods.
