In her opening statement of the 2024 Renewable Hydrogen Coalition summit, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlights the progress made for renewable hydrogen in EU during the last year. The European renewable hydrogen production capacity has increased 4 times and several new projects have reached final investment decision. Von der Leyen specifically points out the significant progress of Stegra (previously H2 Green Steel) and that the green hydrogen production plant that will part of Stegra’s steel production facility is expected to be the largest electrolyser in the world when ready in just a few years. We welcome the support from the European Commission and are looking forward to continued policy that will support production of decarbonized materials, e.g. #greeniron and #greensteal, with #greenhydrogen. #EUETS and #CBAM with a real and firm price on CO2 emissions in industry, an increased #Innovationfund, a scaled EU domestic #hydrogenbank and policy for a continued and accelerated deployment of renewable electricity production will be crucial policies for the future of green hydrogen in EU.

Is it a good idea to invest in green hydrogen? 💧 The green hydrogen market is booming. All eyes are on it because of its significant advantages in addressing the major challenge of climate change. 🌱 The EU wants to reach 40 GW of electrolysers and 20 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030 to achieve energy independence. The IPCEI Hy2use project is providing €5 billion for 35 projects in 13 countries. But investment in green hydrogen has risks. The technologies are expensive and there is a lack of infrastructure. Overall, green hydrogen represents a major economic and environmental opportunity, growing from 0.3 GW in 2020 to 137 GW in 2030. 📈 To learn more about the benefits and challenges of investing in green hydrogen, read this article: https://lnkd.in/e33aUFVN #Hydrogen #EmpoweringTransitions #Equans

European clean hydrogen projects and electrolyser manufacturing are being supported as part of a €4.8bn ($5.1bn) Innovation Fund push. With 85 Net Zero projects selected in total, the package is supporting six clean hydrogen production projects and eight electrolyser manufacturing firms. The Innovation Fund using revenues raised from the EU’s emissions trading scheme (ETS), paid by big emitters to award grants for clean energy projects. European Commission Climate Chief, Wopke Hoeskstra, said this latest funding spree demonstrated how the EU ETS is a “great tool in reducing emissions and funding the projects we need to build a climate-neutral and competitive Europe.” Four green hydrogen projects in Belgium, Germany, France and Finland; one Belgian blue hydrogen plant; and a waste-to-hydrogen facility in Sweden are all being supported.

Hydrogen will be key to decarbonize “hard to abate” sectors and can also be used as feedstock to produce carbon neutral fuels which is vital if we are to meet net zero targets. But there are challenges of long duration storage for green hydrogen. What is the role of hydrogen storage in the UK energy mix? What are the challenges and solutions for hydrogen storage? How will long duration storage maximize renewable generation? What value does hydrogen transport and storage bring to the wider energy system? DNV is proud to be the Knowledge Partner of RenewableUK Green Hydrogen and share insights to advance the industry. Sarah Kimpton will participate in session ‘A4: The challenges of long duration storage for green hydrogen’ at 13:30-14:30 at the ACC in Liverpool: https://lnkd.in/ew2BXsnz #Hydrogen #EnergyTransition #GreenHydrogen #RUKGH24
