💼🚀 Career and Family in Experimental Science 👪🧪 Working in the lab—whether in entrepreneurship, industry, academia or beyond—is always challenging. Regulations and laws related to pregnancy and breastfeeding can create additional complexity, and later, experiments often seem to have their own minds and unpredictable schedules, much like children. In "Career and Family in Experimental Science" organized together with @unisyscat we have learned form successful parents with great careers in experimental science about their tipps and tricks to handle lab work and family life. In her keynote, Prof. Dr. Sina Bartfeld shared four key points: 1️⃣ Flexibility in finding individual solutions for parents. 2️⃣ More time and flexible working hours. 3️⃣ Financial support for childcare and help with household tasks. Her mantra: “Perseverance.” Our panel discussion offered further valuable insights: Katharina Rudisch: “Parenthood makes you better in teamwork – accept help.” Dr. Vivian Spiering: “One gets more efficient as a parent, but keep in mind to take care of yourself.” Katharina Kremer: “Trust your expertise. There are ways to handle the work, even with hurdles.” Prof. Dr. Sina Bartfeld: “Be honest with yourself, your partner, and your colleagues about what is possible and where another solution is required.” A big thank you to our speakers and participants for this inspiring exchange! 💬 What strategies have you found to balance family and career in experimental science? #LabParents #ChemicalInventionFactory #ScienceCareers

☑️ *READ ASTRACT BELOW:* Keywords: Neonatal unit; Parents; Perceptions; Professionals; Qualitative; Technology. Part 1: Background: Complications during pregnancy, childbirth and/or the postnatal period may result in the admission of a baby to a neonatal unit (NNU). While the survival and long-term prospects of high-risk infants are enhanced by admission, the enforced separation of the parent and child may have psychological consequences for both. There is a need to develop and evaluate interventions to help parents 'feel closer' to their infants in circumstances where they are physically separated from them. In this paper we present findings from an in-depth, theoretically-driven, evaluation of a technological innovation designed to address this need. The study sought to explore parent and professional views of the impact of the technology, which transmits real-time images of the baby via a webcam from the NNU to the mother's bedside in the post-natal care environment. Methods: A qualitative approach was adopted, guided by a critical realist perspective. Participants were recruited purposively from a NNU located in East-central Scotland. Thirty-three parents and 18 professionals were recruited. Data were collected during individual, paired and small group interviews and were analysed thematically. Following the initial analysis process, abductive inference was used to consider contextual factors and mechanisms of action appearing to account for reported outcomes.(...) This story is fascinating... During early childhood, a baby's development is crucial. One key milestone? Crawling. Crawling isn't just about moving around. It plays a vital role in building hand-eye coordination. When babies crawl, they strengthen their muscles and improve motor skills. But there's more. As they navigate their environment, they engage in cognitive processes. They learn to judge distances, understand spatial relationships, and explore cause and effect. This exploration is essential for their neurological development. Parents and caregivers can support this by creating safe play environments. Encourage babies to explore different textures, surfaces, and obstacles. Pediatricians emphasize the importance of these activities for overall development. Understanding the science behind crawling can empower parents. It provides insights into fostering a healthy, engaged generation. By promoting crawling, we help babies build a strong foundation for future learning and physical activities. Key Takeaways: 1. Crawling is more than movement. It's a critical developmental milestone that enhances hand-eye coordination and cognitive skills. 2. Create supportive environments. Safe play spaces encourage exploration and learning. 3. Trust the science. Pediatric insights guide parents in nurturing healthy growth. .#ChildDevelopment #BabyMilestones #CrawlingBenefits #EarlyLearning #ParentingTips #BabyGrowth #MotorSkills #HandEyeCoordination #NeurologicalDevelopment #PediatricAdvice #EarlyChildhoodCare #BabyExploration #HealthyDevelopment #ParentSupport #BabyCognition

With Independence Day approaching, a day of great significance for us Indians, I reflect on a different kind of freedom: liberating our children from the clutches of excessive screen time. As parents, we observe that our children are consistently drawn to screens on a daily basis. Although technology has its benefits, it is frequently overused by our kids. According to research from the American Academy of Pediatrics, children spend 3 times more than the recommended limits fixated on screens. This excessive screen time is associated with several adverse effects, such as disturbed sleep, reduced attention spans, and challenging behavior when screen usage is restricted. As parents, this prompts us to consider what other options are available. At SuperBuddy, we have helped over 50,000 parents engage their kids differently—using audio stories that spark their imaginations with tales and tunes, all without the downsides of screen exposure. However, our mission goes beyond just our products. Whether it's through listening to a story, playing outside, or creating art, every step away from screens nurtures healthier, more independent young minds. On this Independence Day, let's empower our children to explore, learn, and play in a world beyond screens. Let's pledge to create one screen-free moment at a time for our little ones. #IndependenceDay #IndependenceFromScreens #LessScreenMoreDream #AudioStorytelling #HealthyKids #Parenting

In "Motherhood, Wet-Nursing and Nation: Nineteenth-Century Brazilian Medical Perspectives" I explored how doctors in nineteenth-century Brazil viewed women's roles, particularly in motherhood and childcare. These views played a significant role in shaping ideas about what a "modern" nation should be, linking race and women's health. https://lnkd.in/gPRcXcQs History helps us questioning not only the past but also present-day issues. By understanding how past attitudes have shaped medical practices, we can work towards a more informed, inclusive, and equitable healthcare system in the present.
