Is this really $750 per tonne of CO2 captured? It's not at a great scale or price point yet and a luxury many can't afford. Wouldn't the investment be better placed on avoidance, reduction and substitution across the whole value chain. Nature based solutions would be cheaper and provide more co-benefits (environmental, economic and social).
Direct air capture is perhaps the most well-known type of carbon removal, but its many flavors are often under-appreciated. Today we're announcing $40M of offtake agreements with 280 Earth - the third DAC offtake Frontier has facilitated. Each of our DAC suppliers takes a distinct approach, particularly in addressing DAC’s current high cost per ton. 280 Earth's DAC system uses commercially-available equipment and an innovative, continuous "move the car, not the factory" process to make DAC more efficient and affordable. CarbonCapture Inc. uses modular machines with upgradeable solid sorbents. This approach allows cost reduction without rebuilding entire facilities. Heirloom uses limestone, an abundant, super cheap sorbent, and electric calcination to draw down carbon dioxide in a continuous fashion. Their cost-down trajectory doesn’t rely on technological breakthroughs, but operational excellence and scale. As these technologies scale and mature, we expect to see continued improvements in efficiency and reductions in cost per ton of CO2 removed. And we're excited to continue supporting novel approaches to DAC – a portfolio of solutions will be necessary to get CDR to gigaton scale. https://lnkd.in/gX-NmuD8

H&M Group, together with other Frontier buyers, have entered an offtake agreement with 280 Earth. The agreement marks Frontier's third facilitated deal within Direct Air Capture (DAC), but H&M Group's fourth DAC offtake agreement as we, in addition to the companies mentioned in Hannah's post, already had an offtake agreement with Climeworks from before joining Frontier. Betting on diversity within broader CDR pathways, as well as across different pathways, we believe is important to accelerate learning rate and reduce risk. #carbonremoval #CDR #climateaction #DAC
