How can we perform dynamic simulation of the in-plane and out-of-plane seismic behavior of unreinforced masonry buildings? How can we simulate the connection between masonry walls and timber floor diaphragms? Dr. Francesco Vanin (Civil Engineer in Résonance Ingénieurs-Conseils, Graduate of EESD Lab - EPFL) presented the new Software SAMUEL for the FE simulation of the seismic behavior of unreinforced masonry buildings for the fourth offer of CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting 2024-2025. #modelling #seismicbehavior #masonry

Can we extend the use of unidirectionally defined mechanical models to the numerical simulation of reinforced concrete walls subjected to cyclic loading? Mr. Simon Karrer (PhD Candidate in the Chair of kfmResearch – Chair of Structural Engineering – Concrete Structures and Bridge Design, ETH Zurich led by Professor Walter Kaufmann at ETH Zurich) presented a very interesting lecture on this topic for the fourth offer of CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting 2024-2025. #reinforcedconcrete #modelling #ethzurich

My new paper, "Fuzzy-Stochastic Stability Analysis of Soil-Steel Structures Under Uncertainty," has been published in Multiscale and Multidisciplinary Modeling, Experiments and Design. This study explores the impact of uncertainty on the safety of geotechnical structures, with a focus on arch soil-steel structures. A fuzzy logic-based model was used to analyze how uncertainties in design parameters affect the performance of these structures, following the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The results reveal that even slight uncertainties, such as ±5% in input parameters, can lead to significant variations in safety factors up to 262%. This research emphasizes the importance of considering uncertainty in the design process and provides sensitivity analyses to identify which factors most impact structural stability. 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dpFYWQDG 📖 My other research: https://lnkd.in/dfuFD6Gv and https://lnkd.in/dpUpNm_b I look forward to your thoughts on these findings! #Uncertainty #Soil_Steel_Structure #Stability_Analysis #Fuzzy_Logic #Optimization

How closely can we predict the seismic failure patterns of unreinforced masonry structures numerically? This video showcases a fascinating comparison between an experimental shake table test of an unreinforced masonry structure and its numerical simulation. With Hossein Derakhshan, David Thambiratnam, and Nimal J Perera J. Perera from QUT (Queensland University of Technology), and Daniele Malomo from McGill University. Special thanks to Ayman ElFouly from Applied Science International, LLC - ASI, and Mattia Calò for their help. 👉 Learn more about the numerical modeling strategy in our paper: https://lnkd.in/gbDDnApH. 👉Shake table test: National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), Lisbon https://www.lnec.pt/en/ 👉 Original shake table test video: https://lnkd.in/gWdsj_gC (part of video used with permission). 👉Software used: Extreme Loading for Structures (ELS) software. 🔍 Note: The corner separation observed was evident during the previous time history cycle (Cycle 7). The material properties used in the simulation differ slightly from those presented in the paper. #QUT #Mcgill #Masonry #AEM #Applied Element Method #Numerical Modelling #LNEC #Extreme Loading for Structures #ELS #Seismic #Unreinforced Masonry
