The UK Agri-Tech Centre is delighted to announce the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AgriTech New Zealand, which will help support bi-directional pathways for innovators between New Zealand and the UK in the agricultural industry 🤝 At its core, the MOU is a voluntary agreement that sets the stage for joint efforts to tackle global agricultural challenges. Through this framework, we aim to drive collaboration on events, initiatives and research, such as webinars, conferences and coordinated farm trials that make the most of our counter-seasonal advantages. The UK and New Zealand enjoy a strong, long-standing relationship, with both nations prioritising innovation and sustainability in agriculture. Review of the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy I recently completed a course on the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy. During the course, I learned to identify and list the fundamental pillars, outcomes, enablers, and guiding principles of the strategy. I also defined key concepts such as Science, Innovation, and Technology, which are essential for understanding how these areas can interrelate to enhance food security and promote sustainable practices.

Meet our speakers: Minna Huttunen, Policy Officer and seconded national expert for Bioeconomy & Food Systems at the European Commission. At the EMPPA 2024 Association Day on 7 November in Brussels, Dr Huttunen will give a perspective on the EU’s bioeconomy strategy as a driving force to pave the way for advanced biobased solutions made of secondary agricultural feedstock like natural fibre. She will be joined on a panel by Peter Schmidt, President of the Section of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment at the European Economic and Social Committee, and Tahsin Dag, Chairman of the Board at EMPPA. Together, they will address topical questions like: 🧩 How will the EU bioeconomy strategy support the development of circular, closed-loop supply chains of fibre based products at local and regional level? 🧩 Should there be a Bioeconomy Action Plan aligned with the planned #CircularEconomy Act and #Biotech Act? The UK Agri-Tech Centre has welcomed the UK Government’s recent launch of the Regulatory Innovation Office (RIO), which has been established to help bring the UK’s most promising technologies to the market faster.  The establishment of the RIO is particularly important for sectors like agriculture, where innovation plays a key role in addressing major challenges such as food security and climate change. However, regulatory frameworks for agri-tech innovations can be complex or span several regulators, making them difficult to navigate. 🇬🇧 🚜 AREFLH forum: dialogue and collaboration for the future of European agricultural policies. On November 6, Brussels hosted the first forum of the Assembly of European Horticultural Regions (#AREFLH), an event that gather regional representatives, experts and European institutions to discuss the challenges that the agricultural sector is facing. In the first two sessions, facilitated by Gerardo Fortuna from Euronews and Simona Caselli President of Areflh, guest speakers included MEPs Carmen Crespo Díaz, Herbert Dorfmann, Valérie Hayer and Dario Nardella, along with key figures from DG Agri such as Ricard Ramon, Dan Burgar Kuželički, Gregorio Dávila Díaz and Pedro Narro. The discussion marked a change in the European institutions approach, which is now more inclined to dialogue with farmers to build shared policies and respond to the concrete needs of the sector. 🔍Focus on sustainability and packaging. Sustainability was the central topics addressed in the third session, facilitated by Nicola Dall’Olio of the Emilia-Romagna Region, with speeches by Mariateresa Vivaldini (European Parliament, ITRE Committee) and Roberto Zanichelli, a member of #ProFood's communication committee. The discussion highlighted the implications of the #PPWR, underscoring the industry's concerns: eliminating plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables is likely to cause increased food waste, higher production costs, and a drop in consumption.
