Two days of inspiring stories and experiences from Living Labs around Europe, within Agroecology is GOOD project. Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre project managers Dace Zariņa and Jessica Girardi are the main contact persons to get to know more about the activities around Latvia and Europe. Experiments encompass the combined application of cover crops with several annual (spring and winter cereals, vegetables, legumes) or permanent (perennial) crops (olives, grapes, fruits) in conventional, organic and mixed farming systems in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Netherlands, Serbia and of course Latvia. GOOD-proposed solutions focus on: ☘ the use of cover crops for the enhancement of their competitive ability against weeds by means of inoculation with beneficial microorganisms; 🕸 the combination of cover crops with other agroecological weed management methods and digital solutions in an integrated scheme towards the reduction of weed pressure and herbicide use. My friend, Karbhari Mangate, from Wakoda village in Kannad taluka, has been using a biomass-powered green cooling chamber to improve the value of his crops for the past two years. He mentioned that the chamber helped ripen bananas in less time compared to the conventional method. It provided a way to store excess lemons during times of harvest and seasonal surplus, preventing panic selling at low prices. Along with ginger, the dehydration of red fresh chillies can also be added as one of the applications. The chamber can raise the temperature to facilitate this process. Storing ginger through dehydration is a good option for farmers when prices are very low. The information shared by Karbhari was encouraging, indicating a positive shift in agriculture with such interventions, playing a crucial role in driving change in agriculture. In Kannad taluk, where commercial crops such as bananas, ginger are the main sources of income, these practices are particularly important. At the farmgate level, primary processing of agricultural produce at its initial stage enhances its value. Moreover, having proper storage facilities to avoid distress selling helps in increasing farmers' earnings. - Deepak Chavan, 24-04-2024 Photo Credits - Sagar Bendre
