Stronger together 💪 In the spirit of the SEA2SEE Project and FishEUTrust Project #collaboration, we are happy to highlight a key moment of both projects’ participation in the #EuropeanOceandays in Brussels at the beginning of March. 🤝 The posters presented by SUBMON and AquaBioTech Group were displayed next to each other in the “Sustainability” section during the “Where next for Europe’s Seas” day. The #EuropeanOceanDays was a great opportunity to unite stakeholders from across Europe in their discussion of #maritime topics and vision for the future of Europe’s seas, with a perspective to 2050. We are looking forward to having more cooperation and in-depth conversations, linking the ocean with the economy and society, and innovation as a global driver for #sustainable living. #sustainability #EU4Ocean #europeanoceandays

Some thoughts from my panel intervention "Happy coexistence with nature, citizens, and fisheries?"at the Annual Event  #WindEurope2024 in Bilbao. As someone deeply involved in pushing for a fast, fair, and nature-friendly #renewableenergy acceleration through my work with Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, the discussion was close to my heart. It’s clear that if we want to see the massive volumes of wind energy 🌬 getting off the ground, we need to bring 💚 local communities into the heart of the conversation. Key takeaways: 🤝 Engaging with Communities: It's about real conversations and genuine dialogue, understanding local needs and concerns, and acting on them. Developers must move beyond viewing communities as obstacles or mere stakeholders to be informed, towards seeing them as active partners in planning, developing, and sharing the benefits of wind energy projects. 💬 Being Fair, Open, and Inclusive: It is about early, transparent, and honest communication. Communities must have a say in projects that affect their lives and must be provided with opportunities to participate meaningfully in decision-making processes, including the location, planning, and development of these projects. 💪 The Power of Community Ownership: When communities can own and co-invest, they see the tangible benefits of wind projects and cherish the projects with pride. These projects do more than just generate power, they EMPOWER communities by ensuring economic benefits are retained locally and foster broad support for the energy transition. Reflecting on the discussions we had, I'm reminded that at the core of our climate action efforts, it is the peoples participation and their empowerment what truly drive meaningful change. 🌊 It was an honour and a pleasure to participate in the 15th edition of the #MonacoBlueInitiative last month where the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco and Institut océanographique, Fondation Albert Ier, Prince de Monaco brought together world leaders and ocean experts to collaborate on sustainable ocean governance and protection.   This year’s gathering was a testament to the collective commitment and progress on ocean conservation over the past decade and a half – and a recognition of how much more there still is to do! It provided a platform not only for dialogue, but also for sharing success stories and setting ambitious goals for the decade ahead. Key takeaways from the discussions include:   🔹Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Achieving coverage of 8.33% of the world’s oceans with MPAs is commendable, yet it underscores the ongoing journey towards our broader 30x30 conservation goals. Highly protected areas remain essential as does deep consultation and agreement with Indigenous and local communities. 🔹Deep Seabed Mining: This issue has now captured mainstream media attention, sparking public discourse and highlighting the need for careful consideration of its impacts on marine ecosystems. At the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance we are clear on the need for precautionary action. Read more in our policy brief:https://lnkd.in/eT6P264R. 🔹Sticking to 1.5° AND moving beyond mitigation: The discussions emphasised the importance of embracing regenerative natural systems. Investing in nature is vital for adaptation and resilience, as is prioritising investment into the sustainable and regenerative blue economy. These insights lay a strong foundation as we eagerly anticipate returning to Monaco for the Blue Economy and Finance Forum that immediately precedes the Third UN Ocean Conference in June 2025. I'm pleased to support the 4th Society & the Sea International Conference 2024 taking place on September 9-10 in Greenwich, UK. https://lnkd.in/emsQ5TBW As someone who is deeply passionate about bringing society closer to the sea, I really believe this conference on developing a sustainable blue economy is of vital importance. Peter Green and the National Maritime team are working tirelessly to bring so many vital threads together, and I will share a few thoughts over the coming weeks - the big thing is to get involved, get along and help galvanise the message on how vital all aspects of the seas, #oceans #seafarers and #globaltrade are...and #shipping is the vital cog making everything turn. The conference will explore strategies for ensuring environmental protection and economic activities go hand-in-hand in the maritime realm. Key topics include new green technologies, sustainable fuels and energy solutions, green finance, and more. Industry leaders and political stakeholders will come together to share insights and drive meaningful dialogue. I'm particularly excited about the focus on creating a "SOCSEA Charter 2024" to help anchor stakeholders towards a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable approach to the blue economy. #MercatorOcean International evolves into an Intergovernmental Organization: Mercator International Center for the Ocean (#MercatorICO)🌐🤝 Following the One Ocean Summit's Brest Declaration in Feb 2022, signed by France, Spain, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and the UK, the transition of Mercator Ocean into an IGO is now a landmark outcome of the United Nations Ocean Conference (#UNOC) set for June 2025 in Nice. ➡️ On Feb 6, 2024, France hosted a high-level meeting with all 6 founding States, marking a pivotal step toward the creation of the Mercator International Center for the Ocean (#MercatorICO).   Next Steps: 📜 Adoption of the draft Convention 🖊️ Plans for signature and initiation of ratification process 🌍 Official establishment at UNOC 2025.   Mercator ICO's Vision: 🌐 Global leader in digital Ocean technology and Ocean prediction 🌊 Supporting states and international organizations in addressing Ocean, climate, and biodiversity challenges 🤝 Continue development in Europe and worldwide   The IGO, governed by Member States, will uphold its commitment to providing reliable Ocean information, building on the success of Mercator Ocean International. The DOF 2024 Forum will showcase the capabilities of the EU Digital Twin Ocean, a public service initiative by the European Commission designed to enhance ocean resource management, address climate change, and promote sustainable operations within the Blue Economy. 🌊 The Digital Twin Ocean (DTO) is revolutionising how we understand and protect our marine environment. To make the most of DTO, it's crucial to harmonise in-situ and satellite data. This means creating consistent protocols and interoperable data standards across different observing communities. ❓ Why? Because models fill gaps in our observations and are essential for running robust “what-if” scenarios, key to supporting the EU Green Deal. That’s where LandSeaLot comes in! 👉 Our project is dedicated to improving data interoperability and ensuring smooth data flows to the DTO. At the 7th MARE Forum, where saving attendees from boring presentations is their mission, I shared my thoughts that resonated with the forum’s style.    🗣 The Big-Hairy-Audacious Goal (BHAG): IMO’s decarbonisation targets   Instead of being paralysed by the BHAG, we need to confront it with a mindset that goes beyond the usual technology adoption S-curve.    This bold ambition should energise us on three fronts: speed, scale and innovation if we want to deliver on our responsibility to reduce our 3% share of global GHG emissions.    🍀 Mother Nature is the single largest customer of shipping   The maritime industry, often referred to as the "lifeline of global trade," relies heavily on fossil fuels, making Mother Nature its single largest customer for carbon emissions reductions.   As fossil fuels will dominate the landscape for some time before green fuels become ubiquitous, energy efficiency technologies (EETs) and onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) are measures that we can undertake now to accelerate decarbonisation of the sector.    To this end, GCMD has a number of initiatives ongoing, including unlocking the carbon value chain through onboard carbon capture and a “Pay-As-You-Save” pilot to scale the adoption of EETs.    📚 Critical skills for the future of maritime   To thrive in the evolving maritime industry, seafarers and executives need to possess the following key skills:   ·         Expertise in handling low- and zero-carbon fuels including a deep understanding of their properties, operational and emergency response procedures ·         In-depth knowledge for O&M requirements to effectively and safely operate EETs ·         As autonomous vessels and remote operating centers become commonplace, strong digital literacy encompassing proficiency in data analysis, automation, and digital communication will be essential ·         Enhanced safety awareness especially with the introduction of alternative fuels. This ensures everyone stays safe in the course of their work and returns healthy to their loved ones.
