🌍🔥 The Earth is on the line. We're facing a world on fire, in conflict, and at the edge of environmental collapse. But there is still hope — our planet is turning, and it can turn around. The path to a greener, more peaceful future may be challenging, but we still know the way forward. The call of nature is louder than ever, urging us to take action. It's time for all hands on deck. It will take collective effort, courage, and a relentless commitment to change. But by uniting our voices and actions, we can turn the tide. Together, we can rewrite the future. We must. 🌱💚

Two years to save the world Chatham House 10 Apr 2024 CHATHAM HOUSE Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, Simon Stiell, lays out what needs to be done by COP30, and its long-term significance. Background: On climate, the world has gone from denial to procrastination. Climate inaction is no longer defended by denying the science, but because action is claimed to be ‘too costly’ or unachievable. Yet the time to shape a liveable future is running out, with the decisions taken over the coming two years determining how close to limiting global warming to 1.5°C we will get by the end of the century. With more than 60 countries going to the polls this year, and nearly 90 per cent of the population in 125 countries wanting stronger climate action, every election is a climate change election. We must now see climate action as a tool to create better, more equitable and cleaner societies, with solid economies built around plentiful, renewable energy. Key questions discussed include: How can governments demonstrate their commitment to keeping 1.5°C alive? How do governments counter procrastination and respond to the increasing threats of climate change impacts reducing their ability to take meaningful mitigation action? What should governments consider when preparing the economic and social policies to meet climate needs?

Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, Simon Stiell using Gallup research at Chatham House earlier this month to highlight and articulate the political mandate for politicians to take climate action across the world. Always great to see your team's work being used to frame the approach to tackling some of the planet's biggest challenges. “Two years to save the world”. A very serious message today from Simon Stiell Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change on what needs to be done by COP30 and it’s long term significance. Please follow some of the important work at Chatham House many of the topics are essential for Execs of both business and public sector to consider. #climatecrisis #sustainability #leadership https://lnkd.in/eUH-9YWu

Have you read Malcolm Gladwell’s book Blink? There’s an intriguing case where daycare centers imposed fines on parents who picked up their children late. Surprisingly, the fines led to an increase in tardiness. Parents perceived the fines as a fee for being late, making it seem more permissible to arrive late since they’ve ‘paid’ for it. This counterintuitive outcome shows how fines can fail to change behavior effectively. (Or it being an insufficient financial deterrent.) This example draws a parallel to the use of carbon credits. In my view, relying on carbon credits isn’t the most effective path to achieving net-zero emissions. We should instead focus on examining and modifying our current behaviors such as fixing energy inefficiencies, rather than simply compensating for our impact. What do you think? #sustainability #netzero
For anyone working within the sustainability sector, your LinkedIn feeds are probably jam-packed with opinions about the latest Science-Based Targets Initiative #SBTI update around allowing carbon credits to be used as part of Scope 3 reduction targets. For those of you not in the sustainability sector, you may have been lucky and escaped the opinion tsunami. Either way, it's fascinating to see what can dominate the news. For both parties - regardless of if you work within sustainability or not - I can almost guarantee you won't have seen the news from UN Climate Chief who last week stated that we have ‘Two Years to Save the World’ from the climate crisis. This news should have knocked every headline off the charts, including the SBTi news. It's not even comparable. One is talking about setting targets and skipping corners to meet them, whilst the other is talking about the importance of being bold and actually taking climate action. If you do anything with your time this week, I encourage you to watch this video https://lnkd.in/enuehrZw of Simon Stiell's speech delivered at London thinktank Chatham House last week. Some of my favourite quotes include: 🤼 “A recent survey by Gallup of 130,000 people in 125 countries found that 89% want stronger climate action by governments. Yet too often we’re seeing signs of climate action slipping down cabinet agendas” 💰 “A quantum leap this year in climate finance is both essential and entirely achievable. Every day, finance ministers, CEOs, investors, and development bankers direct trillions of dollars. It’s time to shift those dollars from the energy and infrastructure of the past, towards that of a cleaner, more resilient future… And to ensure that the poorest and most vulnerable countries benefit" 📜 "We still have a chance to make greenhouse gas emissions tumble, with a new generation of national climate plans. But we need these stronger plans, now." 🙌 "Every voice matters. Yours have never been more important. If you want bolder climate action, now is the time to make yours count.”

"For those who say that climate change is only one of many priorities, like ending poverty, ending hunger, ending pandemics, or improving education, I simply say this: none of these crucial tasks...will be possible unless we get the climate crisis under control."
