⚗️ Have you ever created a safe space for experimentation inside an organisation? 🖊️ A note in an OECD post on effective innovation labs got me thinking about my own experience. While the post was specifically about government organisations, I found the same applied to private organisations as well. 📦 Being able to create a sandbox for rapid experimentation within agreed-upon parameters fast-tracked our learnings and success. If you have had experience implementing such spaces within a government organisation, I would love to hear your story. https://buff.ly/48ojDrW #behavioralscience #behavioralchange #sustainability #systemsthinking

On Thursday, May 24th, we hosted the 6th and final Ac-DatEP innovation workshop, focusing on the exciting topic of shared mobility. 🌐 🔍 During this workshop, organized by the Mobile Media & Communication Lab at FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, we delved into various challenges related to shared mobility. We explored how data can be harnessed to address these challenges effectively. 📊 🔎 Our activities included a meticulous analysis of shared mobility user experiences. We also considered the impact and potential benefits from the perspective of city administrations. 🏙️ 🔬 Following the workshop, our project team will thoroughly examine the valuable contributions made by participants. We’re eager to identify opportunities for applying the innovative solutions developed both within and beyond the Ac-DatEP project. 💡 🌐 The Aachen Data Pool Project (Ac-DatEP) is a project funded by the German mFUND. Its purpose is to collect, analyze, and enrich mobility data in Aachen. The goal is to support sustainable mobility planning in the region and provide local start-ups and citizens with the opportunity to develop new concepts for data utilization. Last week, I attended the #EUSPRI2024 conference on ‘Governing technology, research, and innovation for better worlds’ at the University of Twente. It was enlightening to hear dozens of great presentations and have a chance to discuss matters of high importance and personal interest. A couple of observations of topical innovation policy issues, based on the sessions I attended: ➰The critical task of translating high-level societal challenges into concrete goals and actions. 🚀Trying to understand the value-added of coordinating innovation policies through missions… 💲…and the costs of adding additional layers of coordination. 📚There is no one-size-fits-all approach to promoting sustainability goals through innovation policy. Distinct approaches need to be adopted depending on various factors, such as the nature of the problem, the state of current solutions, local conditions, prevailing institutions, and interdependencies with other activities. Still, we need easily accessible tools to get started! 📈Complexities tend to increase significantly when focusing on the diffusion of sustainable innovations. 🏢Much attention was given to organizational capabilities related to transformations. Innovation policy scholars are getting closer to issues traditionally studied within the fields of management, organization studies, and public administration. I see many opportunities for cross-pollination here. I was glad to give a couple of speeches myself. The first one, titled "Rethinking Transformative Innovation Policy in the Context of Post-Growth," is ongoing work with Riina Bhatia and Tuuli Hirvilammi. Our aim is to challenge the innovation policy community to reconsider its relationship with the question of limits to growth. I was pleased to have a good discussion during the session "New and Alternative Forms of Entrepreneurship and Innovation as Catalysts of a Better World," organized by Barbara Kump, Michel Ehrenhard, and Dr. Svenja Damberg. Afterwards, I had many conversations on a-/de-/post-growth and was glad that the topic raised so much interest (and emotions!). The second presentation, "Tensions in Transforming an Innovation Policy Paradigm: A Sectoral Analysis," introduced our analysis of diverse co-existing understandings of what the role and methods of innovation policy are (and should be) related to sustainability objectives. It’s based on collaborative work with Hanna Entsalo, Susanna Horn, Kirsi Hyytinen, Helmi Hämäläinen, Nina Rilla and Anton S.. The session on "Transformative Innovation Policy in Europe: Tools, Implementation, and Evaluation Insights", organized by Bianca Cavicchi and César Dro, had an outstanding turnout and super interesting discussions. My final observation was that I really need to work on my elevator speech. As a result of working on diverse topics, I likely described my interests quite differently to everyone I met. 🧩 With their strengths in #knowledge creation and their role as community anchors, #universities are ideally equipped to create and orchestrate #support for the kind of #innovation that the sustainability imperative requires. 📌 However, to be able to take on this #role they need to develop a #culture of open innovation, #experimentation and #iteration, and #value, which requires supporting #teams that will #champion the #change and facilitate #collaborations among the diverse #actors of the innovation #ecosystem. . . . . #university #innovationecosystem #development #process

Are you on the move 🤔? Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said, “The New European Innovation Agenda is our key tool for boosting and promoting home-grown innovation in the EU. We can be proud of what we have already achieved in the past two years, and I look forward to seeing the agenda deliver on the remaining commitments as we move forward.” In addition to the 25 actions of the New European Innovation Agenda, the report includes measures announced by Member States and Associated Countries in support of the NEIA ranging from AI academies to Free Technological zones, from Observatories on the startups to special visa for researchers, to national innovation laws to funding programmes. Over 200 actions have been mapped by the EIC Forum, where representatives of Member States and Associated Countries present and discuss innovation policies and instruments. In addition, more than 150 regions are on track to become Regional Innovation Valleys. The Commission plans to announce the names of these regions in Summer 2024. More than 250 innovation stakeholders in these regions are expected to be granted a total of over €115 million of EU funding and committed to co-fund another €77 million from private and public sources.
