Paris 2024 is setting a new standard for sustainability in the Olympics! They've pledged to cut their carbon footprint in half compared to previous Games. This is a big step forward, and they're achieving it through some innovative methods: * The Aquatic Centre With a 5,000 sqm roof covered with photovoltaic panels, it will be one of France’s largest urban solar farms and supply all the energy that the centre needs. * Athletes’ Village Shaded Solar Structure The Athletes' Village bus station's 800sqm solar roof will shade athletes while generating 25% of the Team Processing Centre's electricity. The shading structure will produce 110kWc. * Floating solar farm on the River Seine The Seine gets a mobile solar farm generating enough clean power for 94 apartments in the nearby Olympic Village! It will be able to produce 78kWc of electricity using its 400m² of photovoltaic surface area. * EV charging stations 800 charging stations from Izivia (EDF) to power official delegations across 3 sites, reducing the Games' carbon footprint. These are just some of the ways that Paris 2024 is making the Olympics more sustainable. Their commitment goes beyond just the Games themselves - they also want to leave a positive legacy for the host community. What do you think about these sustainability efforts? Are you excited to see a greener Olympics in Paris? #Paris2024 #Sustainability #Olympics

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games serve as a prime example of how large sporting events can mitigate their environmental impact and advocate for sustainability on a global scale. By integrating renewable energy, using recycled materials, ensuring second-life use for temporary structures, and emphasizing plant-based food options, the Paris Games aim to set new standards in sustainability. Spectators at these events will directly experience these sustainability initiatives, and the organizers will actively promote their efforts. This visibility can inspire individuals to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives and advocate for environmental responsibility in their communities. Proposals to scale back or eliminate commercialized sports overlook the influential role these events can play in driving positive behavioral changes. The strategies implemented for the Paris Games build on past experiences and will inform future events, including the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. In essence, the Olympics act as a global showcase for sustainability, demonstrating what can be achieved through collaboration with international corporations to minimize environmental impact. This influence extends beyond the Games themselves, encouraging other sporting events, leagues, federations, and spectators worldwide to pursue similar sustainability goals (The Conversation). As a huge sports fan, an advocate for a sustainable future and ahead of the opening ceremony tonight for the Paris 2024 Olympics, I was impressed to learn how Paris is setting new sustainability standards for global sporting events 👏 In case you didn't know, here are a few things they are doing to support a sustainable future... 👣 Reducing the carbon footprint by 50% compared to London 2012 and Rio 2016, aligning with the Paris Agreement. ☀️ All venues are using 100% renewable energy sourced locally. Being connected to the grid, it enables them to use renewable energy without the need for temporary diesel generators. 💧 Seats made from recycled plastic bottle caps. 👷 95% of venues are existing or temporary, minimizing new construction and reducing the carbon footprint. 🔋 37% reduction in the Olympic fleet, using electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles. ♻️ 90% of equipment and goods secured for second life use, supporting a circular economy. Paris 2024 is committed to leading by example in sustainability and this is a huge step towards a greener future which is going to set an example for future global sporting events to follow. Super excited to see the incredible sporting talent over the next few weeks, let me know which sport you'll be most excited to watch 👇 #Olympics #Paris2024 #SustainableSport #Sustainablefuture #Greenenergy

All eyes are on Paris 🇫🇷 as we enjoy this year’s Olympics so we’ve been looking into how sustainable the games really are…🤔 “Paris 2024 has made sustainability a part of its DNA since the bid. So, since the bid, there's been an analysis of what could be our emissions if we didn't do anything. And then, what could we act upon to reduce those emissions and take a chance of, you know, being aligned with this ambition of reducing our emissions by half?" Georgina Grenon Director of Environmental Excellence for the Paris Games, said. Organisers have focused on reducing emissions across three categories: 👷construction 🚖 transportation and 🏟️ operations The largest change from previous games is in construction; with 95% of facilities either already existing or temporary. ✅ However the announcement that the ARMSA team were delighted to hear is that energy represents only 1% of emissions. Organisers say the games use 100% renewable power from wind and solar farms, plus solar panels. ☀️💨 ✅ It seems that the greatest challenge is how to reduce transportation-related emissions. As far as we can see, there are a few low-carbon transport options in Paris, including cycling routes 🚲, metro trains 🚆, buses 🚌 and other public transport. The question is, how can organisers control how people travel to the Olympics?🤔 Food for thought as we congratulate France on the sustainability progress to date. 🇫🇷 #paris2024 #olympics #france #sustainability EDF SONNEDIX FRANCE IV Gilles Lajeunesse Stéphane BEHR Mathieu Lamome Sébastien MARTINI Rémy VEROT Tiffany Gastineau Lydia BACHKAR Yves-Arnaud Peres
