Motivation Monday – Honoring Veterans' Sacrifice Today, on Veterans Day, we are reminded of the commitment and sacrifice that our soldiers have made for this country. They didn’t just show up; they dedicated themselves fully to something larger than themselves. That kind of courage and discipline is a powerful example for all of us in our work and our lives. If there’s one thing we can take from the service and sacrifice of veterans, it’s that we owe it to ourselves, our teams, and our customers to never settle. Sales reps should always be pushing to improve, never letting the status quo or a light calendar hold them back. And managers, let’s drive our teams to this same standard—because excellence isn’t an option; it’s a duty. Veterans didn’t serve halfway, and we cannot perform halfway. The blank space on a calendar is wasted potential, and settling for “good enough” is a disservice to the opportunities in front of us. 1.14 million. It's the population of Baltimore, MD and Albuquerque, NM combined. Taylor Swift sold that many copies of her album Midnights. It's the number of millionaires living in California. Also, according to the Veterans Administration, the estimate of the number of servicemembers lost in conflicts fought by the United States. On one hand, it is altogether fitting that we should dedicate a day to remember and honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and our allies. On the other hand, the immensity of this number and the loss it encompasses is staggering. Tragic. For each servicemember counted, there are family members and friends, platoon-, ship-, and squadron-mates that are impacted by these losses. Often for the rest of their lives. Those impacts far outlive the length of time one may know the servicemember that didn't make it home. It is certainly true for me, and I know I am not alone in this amongst my colleagues. There is often a fusion of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day in people's minds. Simply put, it is never a bad time to thank a veteran for their service, but Memorial Day isn't for those of us that remain. There is also the tendency to focus on celebrating the start of summer instead of remembering the original reason for the holiday. This is not to say we shouldn't enjoy time with family and friends. Quite the opposite. There few better ways to honor a sacrifice than celebrating what it provides. Only a humble request to add something simple to your agenda. During this time off and all the benefits to mind, body and spirit that it hopefully gives to you, consider taking a moment or two to reflect, in whatever manner you choose, on the purpose for and significance of the Memorial Day holiday

Today isn’t about our usual laughs or the daily grind. Veterans Day is a day to step back, remember, and honor those who made the boldest shift of all—the choice to serve, to protect, to sacrifice. Our Journey Beyond The Air Force🫡🇺🇸 They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and these two photos of my husband Dr. Dominic Hemingway, PhD and me tell the story of a lifetime. The first image captures us in our Air Force uniforms, standing tall and proud, having dedicated 30 years of our lives to serving our country. Every stripe, every medal, every look of determination on our faces speaks to the commitment, sacrifice, and strength it took to wear that uniform. But the story doesn’t end there. The second image is our "after"—a snapshot of the next chapter in our lives. Here we are, out of uniform but still standing tall, having transitioned from military life to a new journey filled with endless possibilities. Happy Veterans Day to all my fellow Vets. It's a point of personal pride to be the fourth generation of my family to have served in the U.S. armed forces. Per a Nov. '23 Pew report, only 6% of current American adults are veterans compared to 18% in 1980, and that number is shrinking. Among our national leadership, veterans only make up 18% of Congress, compared to a high of 75% in the early 70s, and it's been 15 years and counting for America's Commander-in-Chief. I'll leave it to the smarter folks to prognosticate what the impact has been & will be on American society & culture, but I can weigh in on some of the life lessons learned from my own experience. *Leaders Eat Last - A cultural norm in the military, you literally don't eat until you've made sure your troops have been fed first. *Personal Sacrifice - Sometimes the accomplishment of the mission is at odds with what's best for the individual and sometimes you have to take one for the team. It's OK to gripe about it, but once the decision is made, get on board and work as a unit toward the common goal. *Suck it up and Drive On - Hollywood loves to glamorize the physical aspects of military life, but it's mental toughness that matters most. Crawling out of a warm sleeping bag at 3 am, exhausted, hungry, and wet to stand guard in the snow doesn't require a 200+ bench press. But it does require grit and perseverance. *What binds us outweigh our differences. Good people come in lots of colors, from very different communities, cultural backgrounds, and experiences.
