Encourage Students to Enjoy Math Without Sacrificing Academic Rigor Math happens in the world all around students whether they realize it or not. When they feel discouraged in the math classroom or state that they’re “not a math person”, this is when it’s necessary for teachers to boost the joy of learning which can be done through any of the following methods: - Encourage experimentation to solve problems - Provide opportunities for students to have choice during lessons - Foster conversation and communication between students - Make lessons hands-on so that students can move around the classroom Teachers can transform the way students see math by allowing them to experience joy and curiosity in the classroom. Check out my recently published dissertation: "Pursuing Culturally Responsive Math Teaching By Secondary Math Educators: A Professional Development Action Research Study". My biggest takeaway is the importance of small group, content-based communities of teachers to learn, collaborate, and reflect together to better deepen a mindset of cultural responsiveness in the classroom. Huntington Learning Center can provide personalized, one-to-one tutoring to support a child struggling in reading, phonics, vocabulary or math. Individualized tutoring helps students SO much! To find out how much, we did some research: We found that with 50 hours of instruction during the COVID period, Huntington students, on average, achieved a 35% increase in math percentile scores from pre- to post-test and a 33% increase in reading percentile scores from pre- to post-test. This was further supported by data from the 2021-2022 school year that showed that with 50 hours of instruction, students achieved a 36% increase in math and 30% increase in reading percentile scores. These results show that in less than 3 months, we can help mitigate learning loss damage from the pandemic and help students regain control and confidence of their academic potential. Interesting read as a former 3rd grade math teacher and instructional coach now in the #professionallearning #curriculum and #educationalconsulting space. I was actually familiar with the premise that math homework did not have proven benefits, especially in comparison to reading (ex. Reading 20 mins per night for elementary students, etc.), but the detrimental aspect is definitely something that I can see being more prominent in homes based on conversations I’ve had with parents in recent years. #education #math https://lnkd.in/erxU26GW
