A bit late to the party, but yesterday marked a groundbreaking shift for the sustainability industry. For the first time, there is clear alignment across the industry on what it truly means to be a Net Zero Carbon Building. This shared understanding is a significant leap forward in the UK’s journey toward its 2050 climate goals. The UK NZC Buildings Standard represents the first cross-industry collaboration to build consensus on Net Zero Carbon requirements across all major building types. It sets targets and procedures that are aligned with national climate goals, enabling the industry to demonstrate that their buildings and fit-out projects meet net zero carbon standards. With this framework in place, I’m excited to dive deeper into the standard and see what it will take for our buildings to achieve this ambitious target. #Sustainability #NetZero #2050Goals #GreenBuilding #FutureOfConstruction #ClimateAction

📢 The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard - Pilot Version is now LIVE! What a journey...I am extremely proud to have contributed to this project, which is a fantastic example of collaboration in the sector. ❔Why is this important? Because it's the first science-led and performance-based standard that covers all sources of carbon emissions from construction and building use. From today, the UK industry has a clear way to understand if a building really is net-zero carbon in alignment with our climate commitments. This is the pilot version, so there's more work to do. But really looking forward to hearing everybody's thoughts on it as it stands. 🤝 Collaboration was key: Another thing that makes this project so special is that it brought together the strength of nine UK organisations and professional bodies (Better Buildings Partnership, BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT LIMITED (BRE), CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), The Carbon Trust) 🙏 Big thanks to the Technical Steering Group and its support team for all the hard work (Jane Anderson, Will Arnold, Clara Bagenal George, Adam Baranowski, Matthew Collins, Nektarios D. Gkanis, Jess Hrivnak, Julie Godefroy, Christine Pout, Sam Wallis, Tom Wigg, Katie Clemence-Jackson, Rosie Bard, Zoe Black, Zoe Watson) And last but not least, acknowledging the contribution of hundreds of people in the Sector and Task Groups, the support by many others since the project started, and the guidance of our Governance Board. 👉🏼 Download the #UKNetZeroCarbonBuildingsStandard: www.nzcbuildings.co.uk 👀 And join our Pilot Launch webinar on the 31st of October: https://lnkd.in/eiYKV92n #UKNZCBS #NetZero #NetZeroCarbon #NetZeroBuildings #NetZeroEmissions #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #BritishStandards #fightgreenwashing

This is a significant step forward for the industry! The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard pilot will finally tackle the issue of greenwashing by providing much-needed clarity and accountability. With clear guidelines and a unified methodology, we can ensure that net-zero claims are rigorously verified and aligned with the industry's climate goals. A critical move to prevent misleading claims and ensure real climate action!
*Coming this month* - Major Milestone in the Fight Against Greenwashing: The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is Coming! 🚀🌍 The UK's first cross-industry Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is set to launch its Pilot Version in the final week of September, bringing clear, unified guidelines for net-zero requirements across all major building types based on a 1.5°C climate trajectory. Leading organisation, including BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UKGBC, have united to create this essential standard, putting an end to inconsistent claims and greenwashing in the building industry 🏗️ For too long, developers have marketed buildings as “net zero” without proper verification. This standard provides a single, agreed methodology to prove that built assets are genuinely net zero carbon, ensuring alignment with our nation’s climate goals. Launching the Pilot Version in September marks a key step toward mitigating greenwashing, ensuring real climate action, and giving industry professionals the tools to deliver on their net-zero promises 💚 Together, we’re building a sustainable and transparent future in UK building standards! 🚨 Industry News: Launch of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (Pilot Version) 🚨 Today, 24th September 2024, marks the launch of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (The Standard) Pilot Version. The Standard is the UK’s first cross-industry methodology for defining net zero carbon buildings, developed through collaboration with leading organisations including BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UKGBC. For the first time, there is a single, agreed methodology to prove a building aligns with the UK’s carbon and energy budgets, offering clear rules to eliminate confusion around net zero claims. Key Highlights: ✅ The Pilot Version includes technical details on how to meet the Standard, including limits, targets, and the evidence required for compliance. ✅ It covers both new and existing buildings across sectors such as commercial, residential, and public spaces. ✅ The Pilot Version is free-to-access and available for download here: https://lnkd.in/eqZm4Ni4 Over 350 industry experts contributed to its development, with feedback from more than 700 stakeholders through consultations and roundtables, including a colleague of ours; Pete M., who has been a contributor to the "Homes" Sector Group over the past two years. This Standard is a game changer for those who fund, design, and manage buildings, ensuring they are truly net zero carbon aligned. Now, the entire industry can take part in shaping the future of carbon-neutral construction in the UK. 💡 For further information, sign up to attend the UKNZCBS Launch Webinar: 🗓️ 31st October 2024 10:00am - 11:30am 📝 Register here: https://lnkd.in/ezxuE8i5 UK NZC Buildings Standard #UKNZCBS #NetZeroCarbon #Sustainability #BuiltEnvironment

The path to sustainability can seem complex, but what matters is that we are all taking steps in the right direction. This World Green Building Week, we are calling on everyone to follow these steps for a better future. Reduce. Electrify. Adapt. The first step is to reduce the amount of energy and resources that we use. The built environment currently consumes 34% of global energy and around half of all raw materials. By improving our energy efficiency and minimising what we use, our sector can dramatically decrease global energy and resource demands. What we can’t decrease we need to decarbonise. Buildings account for 37% of global energy-related carbon emissions. To reduce this, we need to electrify our energy sources, increase renewable energy and eliminate the use of fossil fuels. Finally, we need to anticipate the future so our built environments can withstand the impacts of climate change. And we need to make sure that no-one is left behind on this journey. Not only will this mitigate the economic impact of our changing times, but ensure healthy, happy and resilient communities in every corner of the world. We know that we need to change. That means building the right policy environments, the right funding environments, and the right industry environments to kickstart more sustainable built environments. So join us in building the transition to a better future. Our network of Green Building Councils is here to help you, every step of the way. #BuildingTheTransition #WGBW24 World Green Building Council
