A new Newsweek article (“Is AI a Climate Hero or a Climate Villain”) quoted David Porter, Vice President of Electrification and Sustainable Energy Strategy at EPRI, and referenced a recent EPRI white paper on data centers. The article cited data from EPRI’s report on AI and data center energy consumption that estimates that data centers could consume up to nine percent of all U.S. electricity generation by the decade's end, an increase from about four percent today. According to the article, David Porter said EPRI is working with tech and electric utility companies to meet the demand for clean electrons. "The biggest challenge for the utility executives is still the timing and how quickly they can bring resources to bear to match up with the data centers," Porter said.
