Held at the Engine Shed in Bristol, the workshop focused on rail electrification across South Wales and Western England and was attended by over 40 rail industry electrification experts. Daniel Smith Chair and Phil Harrison Vice Chair of RIA Wales & Western Leadership Group ran the Q&A panel session and asked: 🔷 What are the hurdles and opportunities in procurement?  🔷 Where can the industry collaborate rather than compete? As the deliberations end and we await the arrival of Cohort 2 of the Clean Futures programme – and so the range of exciting innovations their new SMEs will bring to the rail sector – we reflect on where the sector is at the moment in terms of the challenges and opportunities it faces and so, most importantly, the track it’s on.   In mid-July our Strategic Business Partnerships Manager delivered a talk to the Rail Industry Association (RIA) North’s Light Rail Member Interest Group in West Yorkshire on the business case specifically for very light rail… core to BCIMO’s mission in our home at the Very Light Rail National Innovation Centre. With the rail’s re-emergence as a cleaner, greener form of transport in the face of climate change, and innovative potential across all aspects of the sector, there is a clear vision being defined within the UK for multi-modal, low-carbon end-to-end services of which VLR is part.   As an even more financially and environmentally sustainable solution, with a range of significant technological advancements, the VLR niche is now differentiating in terms of innovative sustainable infrastructure and vehicle design. MEGA PROJECTS GLOBAL EXCELLENCE - MEETING COST, SCHEDULE AND BENEFITS TARGETS A new report reveals that the Kansas City International Airport (KCI) Terminal Modernization Project has achieved remarkable success on a global scale. The project, which opened its new terminal building on February 28, 2023, ranks in the top 4% of airport projects worldwide for meeting both cost and schedule targets. Key highlights of the KCI Project's success include: • Enhancing the passenger experience at KCI • Providing flexibility for future growth through innovative terminal design • Introducing a novel project delivery model that can benefit similar projects in the future The KCI Project outperformed 91% of US benchmark projects in terms of cost and 95% in terms of schedule. When considering the benefits achieved, the project is placed in the top 0.5% of megaprojects globally. The independent assessment and case study, conducted by Oxford Global Projects and the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School, underscores the KCI Project's exceptional performance and its potential to serve as a model for other mega projects . 💼 Rail Baltica continues to work on the implementation of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to accelerate the project’s development and lessen the burden on state budgets. ✅ This approach is particularly timely, as it follows the successful funding allocation to the Porto-Lisbon High-Speed Rail (HSR) project, which received €813 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) – the highest amount awarded to any project in this funding round. This slightly exceeds the amount awarded to the second-place Rail Baltica. ➡ “Our team is currently assessing which sections of the #RailBaltica project would be most suitable for a #PPP approach, ensuring that we maximize the benefits of private sector involvement while delivering on our strategic objectives. Preliminary discussions with potential private investors and financiers have yielded encouraging results, with strong interest in participation. This, coupled with public support from governments, indicates the potential viability of a PPP strategy for Rail Baltica,” said Peteris Celms Investment Development Manager at RB Rail AS.
