last full day at #COP16 for me, and the theme is #agrifood and #desertification. I have plenty of examples where #communities and #smallholderfarmers leverage the #Groasis #Waterboxx and #Growboxx to plant a combination of #fruit trees and #vegetables to have long term wealth and near term income and food - all whilst using 90% less water. Looking forward to my meetings! #TripleNinetyBenefit

🌊🌿 Happy belated World Algae Day! 🌿🌊 At BettaF!sh, we’re harnessing the power of one of nature's most amazing plants: seaweed! 🌱 This ocean superfood not only offers a sustainable alternative to overfished resources, but it also brings incredible nutrition to the table – and we’re just getting started. 💡 Did you know that seaweed absorbs CO2, supports marine ecosystems, and can thrive without freshwater or fertilizers? It’s a true climate hero and one of the most resilient crops for the future of food! 🌍 Unlike traditional crops, seaweed grows in the ocean, making it immune to many of the issues faced by land-based agriculture, such as droughts or soil degradation. However, current harvesting practices in some parts of the world still face challenges like overharvesting and unsustainable methods. At BettaF!sh, we’re committed to working with partners who prioritize responsible, regenerative harvesting to ensure that seaweed continues to thrive for generations to come. 🌿 Join us in celebrating algae, the oceans' quiet champions, and our mission to create seafood alternatives that nourish both people and the planet. 🌊🌿 #WorldAlgaeDay #SeaweedRevolution #SustainableFood #PlantBased #Bettafish #TUNAH #ClimateAction #HealthyOceans #ResilientCrops #SustainableHarvesting

#seaweed was one of the frontiers of the #blueEconomy that brought us together to form #BlueGreen. And there’s still great potential for #kelp oriented new ventures in the Sea Garden State, especially around product development, processing, sales, marketing and distribution of all things seaweed related. From cattle feed that generates less methane to plastics and carbon storage, kelp has a promising future as part of sustainable #aquaculture. https://flip.it/w-BjT9

🌊 Climate and nature inspiration of the week: seaweed 🌊 I came across a great story from Good Business a couple of weeks ago, about seaweed. A massively versatile ocean crop that can be made into snacks, fertilisers, animal feed, and packaging for fast food, amongst other things. Good Business highlighted Algapelago a company that is growing a network of seaweed farms – “alga-pelagos” – to unlock seaweed’s potential as a sustainable material for applications in agriculture, skincare, biomaterials and biorefining. 'Their 120-hectare site in North Devon is the largest kelp cultivator in the UK – and their upcoming products will range from feed additives to raw kelp, as well as important natural capital solutions, such as blue carbon and biodiversity net gain credits.' Why is seaweed so brilliant? 🌊 Seaweed farming doesn’t require land or fresh water, fertilisers or pesticides making it one of the most sustainable crops there is 🌊 It sequesters carbon and improves the marine environment 🌊 Seaweed is high in minerals, vitamins and bioactive compounds. Making it an ideal solution for natural fertilisers and animal feed supplements 🌊 Seaweed could be a key enabler to more regenerative farming by replacing carbon-intensive, unsustainable inputs When I was a child playing in the UK's rock pools and beaches on summer holidays I never much liked seaweed - slimy and cold! Little did I know it was going to play such a key role in addressing the climate crisis! #Climatecrisis #Climateinspiration #regenerativefarming #sustainableproducts

🌿Spanish Greenhouses Adapting to Climate Change As climate challenges rise, Spain’s greenhouse growers are innovating to stay #resilient. High temperatures and water scarcity push farmers to adapt, with many turning to #hydroponics, a soilless cultivation method that conserves water and ensures crop quality. Leaders like Cualin Quality invest in high-tech glasshouses with #climatecontrol and #waterrecycling systems to tackle #environmental pressures and boost #sustainability. These advancements are helping secure the future of farming in Spain’s “sea of plastic” greenhouses. #ARISEproject #climateresilience #sustainablefarming #futureoffarming Source: https://lnkd.in/dqqt2NgB

The Seaweed Revolution! Did you know there are roughly 12,000 types of seaweed, which according to Vincent Doumeizel constitute the largest untapped resource on the planet? Vincent Doumeizel, Senior Advisor on Oceans to the United Nations Global Compact, advocates for the potential of these species in promoting sustainable food sources and a better future. The author of the book "The Seaweed Revolution” (La Révolution des Algues) suggests that they are crucial in addressing global issues such as hunger and climate change. “Let’s call them sea vegetables, so that people can understand how delicious they are. Let’s call them sea forests so that people can find a way to protect them." The first thing we need to do is change the name”, he adds. Seaweed serves as a crucial food source, rich in proteins, nutrients, zinc, and vitamins while containing minimal fat. Once dried, they are easy to store and transport. In addition, seaweed possesses natural antibiotic and antimicrobial properties and serves as a sustainable food source for animals, greatly reducing methane emissions from livestock. Just a small amount of red algae added to ruminants' diet reduces their methane emissions, a greenhouse gas linked to global warming, by up to 90%, the expert explains. The specialist highlights they can also be used as biostimulants to improve crop yields and enrich the soil and, in the medical field, their use is being explored in treatments for Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis and some forms of blindness. Likewise, its use in the manufacture of a fabric that is more sustainable than cotton production, which can involve intensive use of pesticides, land and water, is being investigated. The potential of seaweed is enormous, but in case a new name is needed to enhance its appeal, what do you suggest? We'll read you in the comments. #algae #seaweed #un #oceans #algaerevolution #food

🐓 The Rise of the Chicken: The World's Most Dominant Bird 🌏 It’s incredible to think that chickens, once wild jungle dwellers of Asia, have become the most numerous bird species on Earth. 🌿 Domesticated over 4,000 years ago in India, their global takeover is no accident. Driven by humanity’s appetite for affordable, easy-to-raise meat and the added bonus of breakfast eggs 🍳, chickens have become the go-to bird species for food. With the industrialization of agriculture, their population exploded—quintupling since the 1960s to over 33 billion in 2020! That’s four chickens for every human on the planet and six times more than the combined number of cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. But this dominance comes at a cost. While chickens thrive in numbers, wild birds face an uncertain future, with habitat loss and environmental degradation shrinking their share of global bird biomass. 🦅 This shift raises pressing questions: How can we balance feeding a growing population while protecting biodiversity? Can sustainable practices ensure chickens don’t outweigh the health of our planet? 🌍 💡 Food for thought: Every choice we make at the dinner table has a ripple effect on the planet. Let’s spark a conversation about sustainable farming and preserving our natural world. 🌱 👇 How can we balance food production and environmental conservation? #FoodSustainability #Agriculture #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalImpact #ClimateAction #GlobalFoodSupply #WildlifeConservation #PlanetEarth #SustainableFarming #EthicalEating #FoodForThought #SaveTheEnvironment #EcoSolutions #FarmingInnovation #SustainableChoices #FoodSecurity #NatureMatters #AnimalWelfare #GreenFuture #ThinkGreen #WildlifeProtection #SustainabilityFirst #HealthyPlanet #EcoAwareness #ActForNature Source: Visual Capitalist
