There’s no question retail media is a hot and crowded space, but it is also one that is quickly evolving with estimated ad spend to reach $165 billion by 2025. Retail media channels, fueled by first-party shopper data, are helping grocers and convenience stores grow their presence and connect with customers. Walmart's advertising business grew by more than 25% in the company's first quarter, and a new streaming agreement is in the works with Disney. What's more, the company announced last week that they plan to install electronic shelf labels across 2,300 stores by 2026 that enable live pricing updates and improved product tracking. Investment in digital media, in particular a foothold in video, is driving growth from marketplace sellers, but few retailers have the scale or technology to match the influence that Walmart, Albertsons, or other large players can create. What many retail grocers are looking to create is a single media platform for interacting with advertising partners.
