“In the cloud.” “To the cloud.” “The cloud.” What is “the cloud?” According to CloudZero: “The Cloud refers to an internet-based server network that supports computing from anywhere and anytime. Cloud computing is basically the practice of multiple users sharing online storage, databases, and compute power (CPU, RAM, and networking) over the internet. It is called “The Cloud” because the supporting infrastructure, services, and resources, are located on third-party owned datacenters all across the world — not locally on an end-user’s device.” (Source: https://lnkd.in/du8t852d.) Referring to this resource and capability as a “cloud” gives the impression that it is esoteric, ethereal, and “in the sky.” That could not be further from the truth. I know, and I get that this is the terminology. Still, it bugs me that we don’t call it for what it really is: an engineering marvel that consumes a heck of a lot of energy and a heck of a lot of brain power to develop, build, deploy, and improve it.
