Today is Halloween, but is it your thing? It’s one of those ‘marmite’ festivals that people seem to love or hate. There is no denying that the kids love it – well, what 6-year-old doesn’t want a bucketful of sweets? And dressing up in scary costumes; that’s a bit of fun, too. By the 1920s, the Halloween tradition had become a recognised holiday in the US with parades and parties; it wasn’t long before we inherited the custom of dressing up and trick-or-treating. The event now brings in so much revenue that it has become the third biggest money-spinning event in the UK calendar after Christmas and Easter. However, there is still debate about where Halloween (also known as All Hallows Eve) originated. Some swear that this date, traditionally dedicated to remembering the dead, started as a Christian ceremony and was celebrated in Ireland and Scotland long before it was introduced to America. It’s undoubtedly a topic of debate…but we aren’t getting involved in all that.
