🚨Calling All Newly Elected MEPs!🚨 Forbidden Colours, Justice for Prosperity & RECLAIM have sent a letter to newly elected Members of the European Parliament who are committed to upholding democratic values. We're inviting MEPs to collaborate with us and our United4Diversity Network (U4D) in the upcoming term to protect human rights and democracy for LGBTIQ+ individuals across Europe. As our research shows, the threat to the rights of LGBTIQ+ people in the European Parliament is growing—up to 40% of MEPs may vote against our communities, compared to 25% in the last term. Democracy is Feminist. "Historically, women in the United States have participated voraciously in civic life, registering and voting at higher rates than men in every presidential election since 1980. Black women show up at the polls and in voter mobilization efforts in even greater numbers, with turnout rates of upward of 66% in 2020." The U.S. House of Representatives is once again going to vote this week to give the president the power to designate NGOs “terrorist” organizations. It failed last week, but the rules were changed, so it will come up again for a vote. Last week it failed because civil society spoke up. We must do this again. Our individual and societal health and well-being depend on it. This is a fabulous piece of work from Elect Her CIC and Engender. A clear and clinical articulation of the reasons why gender balance in politics has proved so elusive 100 + years on from women’s enfranchisement. Importantly it also offers a succinct summary of where change needs to happen and how it can happen, in parties, political institutions and wider society. The reports advocates action on areas like, 👉gender norms /stereotypes & culture ( these change at a glacial pace without a LOT of focus and proactive work) 👉structures Technical equal access is not a reality if the structure of organisations work against women with child/elder caring responsibilities ( I.e the majority of women ) 👉money ! Being in politics incurs costs, it’s not equal if in fact you have to be well off to participate. E.g the time needed to be a good councillor is barely remunerated, so in reality only open to those with other means.
