Optimizations in cell and battery pack designs, alongside the use of higher nickel NMC and NCA cathodes, have led to steady improvement in battery energy density over the past 10-15 years. The energy density limit from current design and material iterations has largely been maximized. However, a promising contender is emerging on the horizon to offer a step-change improvement - silicon. IDTechEx forecast the market for silicon anode material for Li-ion batteries to exceed US$24 billion by 2034. We all agree that prices for EVs need to go down for a mobility transition to happen. Now, how about this, Infineon Technologies is introducing the HybridPACK Drive G2 Fusion power module which combines silicon and silicon carbide chips. This leads to high performance in traction inverters at lower system cost. For me, this is another great solution to drive decarbonization.

Today’s conventional lithium-ion batteries fall short of meeting the needs of many automotive, consumer electronics, and stationary storage applications. Many believe that the unique cell design of solid-state lithium-metal batteries will help bridge this gap – particularly when it comes to electric vehicles – because the technology is designed to enable longer range, faster charging and enhanced safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.
