I was honoured to deliver two presentations for senior officials at the #FAO Regional Conference for the Near East on “Accelerating Transformation Towards Sustainable #Markets, #Trade and Consumption” and “#Financing to End #Hunger”. To reverse the increasing trend of undernourishment in the Near East and North Africa and combat the triple burden of malnutrition, the transformation of food systems is necessary, which requires significant additional financing. Existing public support for food systems should be re-purposed to ensure more efficient #agrifoodsystems and target more #nutritious #food and agricultural products with less #environmental footprint. However, repurposing current public budgets will not be enough to reach the #sdg2 targets. Financing the transformation of agrifood systems will require significantly increased financing. #innovativefinance can help address the funding shortage that will be the focus topic of this year’s FAO flagship publication in the region. In my other presentation, I highlighted four primary areas of FAO’s intervention in the region to accelerate the transformation process, namely #tradepolicy and #partnerships, Food loss and waste reduction, Urban food systems and #nutrition. According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), Africa spends up to 𝐔𝐒$𝟕𝟓 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 annually to import around 100 million tonnes of cereals. This is a concerning figure, especially given the vast arable land across the continent. 𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟? We all remember how the Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupted the global wheat supply chain, causing a grain shortage in Africa. The conflict is estimated to have caused a 30 million-ton shortage of grains in Africa. As a result, the conflict threatened African food security. Firstly, it drove up food import costs, increasing the debt burdens of many low-income African nations. Secondly, these cost hikes created severe food accessibility issues, pushing some countries to the edge of famine. During the AFMASS Food Manufacturing Expos event in June, I moderated a panel discussion and posed a crucial question to industry experts: Was the Russian invasion of Ukraine a wake-up call for African agriculture? Given Africa's overreliance on grain imports, how can Africa feed itself using a variety of traditional grains? The experts had something to say about composite fours. Catch the full discussion in our magazine.
#Compositeflours are gaining traction across #Africa as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional wheat flour, addressing economic and nutritional challenges. By blending local crops like #cassava, #millet, #sorghum, and other indigenous grains with wheat, composite flours can help reduce reliance on expensive imports, which often strain foreign exchange reserves. These flours also introduce diverse nutrients into diets, supporting food and nutritional security in the continent. In this article in Issue 10 of MILLING Middle East & Africa Magazine, we feature insightful thoughts from an expert panel discussion during the AFMASS Food Manufacturing Expos 2024. Currently, we observe several significant #megatrends in global food-supply chains. The increasing global population is driving the demand for more #food, while a growing middle class in many regions is exhibiting changing #nutritional preferences. Additionally, there is a rising awareness among consumers about the quality and origins of their food. ETG operates across a diverse range of supply chains, including #infrastructure, #agriculturalinputs, food #processing, #logistics, and #energy. Our operations span 30 countries within sub-Saharan Africa and 45 countries worldwide. The Farmers 360 Degree Link project is a collaborative venture connecting ETG's extensive network of #cotton farmers in sub-Saharan Africa with innovative digital technologies from Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ETG purchases raw cotton from the #farmers, processes it, and supplies it to intermediary processors, who then produce and sell the finished products through their outlets. Watch this video to learn about our #collaboration with Mitsui & Co. and our initiatives to strengthen food-supply chains and improve #transparency in response to the #evolving needs of #consumers worldwide. #globaldemand #foodsupplychains #consumertrends #wellness #cottonfarmers #Africa https://lnkd.in/ghr5QPU4

📈 Significant progress is needed to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Target to end hunger by 2030. The latest edition of ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World’ assesses why the previously identified policies and investments needed to transform agrifood systems have not been implemented at scale. 👉 https://t.ly/8gNip Key takeaways: 💰 A financing gap presents a key obstacle to attain the scale of actions needed. Increased and more cost-effective financing is needed. 🌍 The countries with the highest levels of food insecurity are those with the least access to financing. 🌽 Public spending mostly targets food consumption rather than addressing the major drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition. 💡 A common definition of financing food security and nutrition must be adopted to better identify underfinanced areas and track intervention impacts. AFS Forum Kigali 2024 Africa Food Systems Forum Urges Innovation, Investment for Food Security ************************* As a youth advocate attending the Africa Food Systems Forum 2024 in Rwanda Kigali, I call for urgent innovation, investment, and political commitment to transform agriculture and ensure food security across the continent. We have highlighted a range of persistent challenges, including inadequate policy frameworks, poor coordination and delivery mechanisms, climate change impacts, infrastructure deficits, fragmented markets, food loss and waste, and limited access to innovation, technologies, and investment. The Forum emphasized the urgency of accelerating efforts to transform Africa’s food systems, driven by the looming deadlines of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2030 and the Malabo Declaration in 2025. Innovative policies, digital technologies, and scaled investments are essential to achieving food and nutrition security while creating jobs for the continent’s growing youth and women populations, according to the AFS Forum 2024, which attracted over 5,000 participants, including policy makers, agribusiness investors, farmers’ organizations, private sector representatives , and youth. The AFS Forum serves not only as a platform for discussion but also as an accountability mechanism, with stakeholders expected to uphold their commitments and take concrete action to drive the transformation of Africa’s food systems. 🥗 Food systems transformation: The missing #policies on consumers' purchasing power 🥗 At this recent side event hosted by @Agrinatura, the @FAO Investment Centre, and the @European-Commission during the @Committee-on-World-Food-Security, a clear message emerged: investing in consumer purchasing power is essential to ensuring global food security. ✅ The discussion explored a key question: Do #farmers feed consumers, or do #consumers feed farmers? ⭕ Currently, food production outpaces the income of many consumers, limiting food access and failing to lift farmers out of poverty. Experts like FAO Investment Centre Director Mohamed Manssouri, CIRAD Economist Tristan Le Cotty, EU Policy Officer Philippe Le Clerc and Julia Tagwireyi of AfriCAN - Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition highlighted that consumer-oriented policies can drive sustainable demand, ensuring that farmers gain from increased production. Also, Senior Food Systems Regional Expert Martin Bwalya noted that boosting productivity alone isn’t enough. The #SASI (Sustainable Agrifood Systems Intelligence) initiative's systemic approach encourages healthy and diverse diets and inclusive economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability in #agrifood. 🔁 Empowering consumers supports the entire food chain, ensuring #foodsecurity and #sustainability for all. #PostharvestLoss is one of the biggest problems affecting economic growth globally. FAO estimates loss to one third of food production. Postharvest loss can be defined as the degradation in quantity and/or quality of food production from harvest to consumption. Quality losses include nutritional value, merchantability, sanitary quality… while, Quantity losses occur due to weight loss, spillage of crops, microbial attack and pest attack. Loss of quantity is more common in developing countries. Therefore, those countries are more affected by food insecurity. However, there are many technologies that can help farmers to fight against the loss of their production. It will be useful to share these technologies in order to increase food security in developing countries especially in Africa. Stay tuned …
