In between technology and design. I'm embarking on my second masters degree as I could not resist the temptation of the Industrial Design Engineering programme at LUT University. Combining courses from both technology and design this represents exactly what I want to keep on doing in the working life as well. Building bridges between design and technology has been my driving force carrying me through the challenges of being the only designer in the house. After graduation (and officially becoming an engineer!) I'm sure I will be in a better position to argue about the benefits of design. After all, as in any design process, you have to know the subject before making changes to it.

Our team is continually inspired by how our MA Design Engineering (MADE) program students transform during the program into true bridge-builders between design and engineering. In our latest cohort's featured projects, you'll see something remarkable: designers who can confidently tackle technical challenges and engineers who thoughtfully craft user experiences. What makes us particularly proud isn't just the innovative projects they showcase - like an AI-integrated cooking assistant or a breakthrough medical device for endometriosis detection - but the deep appreciation our students develop for both disciplines during their time together. This profound respect for their counterparts' expertise and the ability to collaborate seamlessly across the design-engineering divide, combined with hands-on technical and creative skills, is at the heart of MADE. Our students and faculty don't just speak both languages - they champion both perspectives. Take a look at how our current cohort is bringing this vision to life: #RISD #RISD1877 Brown University School of Professional Studies #designengineering Brown University School of Engineering
Launched in 2021, the highly selective, 11-month Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE) program focuses on collaboration and problem solving, allowing students to develop iterative making skills and produce small and large-scale work that addresses real-world issues and improves people’s lives. “About half of the students come in with a design background—anything from user experience to animation to architecture—and the other half with mechanical engineering or computer science backgrounds,” says Program Director Beth Ames Altringer Eagle. “What differentiates ours from other programs is the collaborative effort to work across the design-engineering divide.” #RISD #RISD1877 Brown University #Design #Engineering

Breathing new life into an old building Exciting times as we begin on-site with the refurbishment of the next building at Stellenbosch Universities Engineering Faculty. Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering is over half a century old and ready for an upgrade. Working in a live academic environment comes with its challenges—requiring careful phasing of works to maintain academic continuity and minimize disruption. All while tackling the complexities of aging infrastructure. But the reward is immense… Rather than replacing, we are revitalizing—sustainable design isn't just about new builds but also about respecting and reimagining what already exists and making the most of what we have. #SustainableDesign #AdaptiveReuse #CampusRevitalization #StellenboschUniversity KMH Architects

What is Design Engineering: A Talk by Surya Vijayanand Design Engineering is a unique field that blends creative disciplines - such as Design Technology, Art, and Music - with technical fields like Mathematics and Computer Science. It bridges art, science, and technology, combining innovation with practicality. Surya, currently in his third year of an MEng in Design Engineering at Imperial College, is mastering this exciting area, developing the expertise to transform ideas into impactful solutions. We were thrilled to welcome back Surya (Class of 2022) for an inspiring STEM talk. Surya shared his journey, insights, and passion for pushing the boundaries of design and innovation. During his talk, he emphasised that a lack of confidence in mathematics should not deter anyone from pursuing a career in Design Engineering. With determination and creativity, he encouraged students to embrace challenges and think outside the box. Surya’s undergraduate course in Design Engineering exemplifies the fusion of technical theory and creativity. His projects focus on transforming innovative ideas into practical solutions and he expressed his ambition to use his skills to elevate the lives of those in need. Surya captivated the audience by presenting some of his remarkable projects: ADAPT: A therapeutic device designed for mild stroke patients suffering from hand muscle spasticity. This groundbreaking invention aims to improve rehabilitation outcomes with precision and ease of use. The FOLDS Shoe: Inspired by origami, Surya designed a shoe that can be manufactured from a single net and sheet of material, reducing complexity and production costs. Pulsar - a performative and expressive instrument that enables users to compose music in real time. And let’s not forget that during Year 12 at Trinity, Surya built a bionic arm for his EPQ, replicating human hand movements. This impressive prototype showcased his early talent for blending engineering with practical problem-solving. The students were highly engaged, asking insightful questions about Surya’s creative process and the challenges he faced while developing his projects. Their curiosity and enthusiasm highlighted the impact of Surya’s journey as an inspiration for the aspiring engineers and designers in the room. It was fantastic to welcome Surya back to Trinity and witness the progress he has made since leaving school. We are immensely proud of his achievements and look forward to seeing how his career evolves, especially as he pursues his goal of making a meaningful difference in the world. Thank you, Surya, for an incredible talk and for motivating the next generation of innovators!
